Renewing pyrotechnic, electrical and mechanical components of the restraint system following an accident
Renewing pyrotechnic, electrical and mechanical components of the restraint system following an accident
Special tools and workshop equipment required

t  Vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system -VAS 505X-
  Note
t  The airbag control unit can be used for up to three incidents in which the side airbag / curtain airbag and/or belt tensioner is triggered.
t  After the third activation the fault display will show „Control unit defective“.
Airbag control unit must be renewed:
t  If driver's/front passenger's airbag has been triggered
t  After side and/or curtain airbags have been triggered three times
t  If housing is damaged
t  In the event of a tunnel deformation within 200 mm radius of control unit
Always renew the following:
t  All triggered airbag units
If front passenger's airbag has been triggered, also replace:
t  Dash panel
t  Supports for passenger's airbag module which have become deformed (must not be bent back into shape)
t  All front airbag sensors at front end
t  Other transversal acceleration transmitter in the case of a deformation of the retaining points in the sensor area (floor pan area).
If driver's airbag has been triggered, also renew:
t  Return spring with slip ring
t  All front airbag sensors at front end
t  Other transversal acceleration transmitter in the case of a deformation of the retaining points in the sensor area (floor pan area).
If side airbag(s) have been triggered, also renew:
t  Pressure sensors on the side on which the airbag was triggered
t  Transversal acceleration transmitters on the side on which the airbag was triggered
t  Seat cover
t  Side padding
t  When seatback (rear) is turned down
t  Other transversal acceleration transmitter in the case of a deformation of the retaining points in the sensor area (floor pan area).
If curtain airbag has been triggered, also renew:
t  Transversal acceleration transmitters on the side on which the airbag was triggered
t  A-, B-, C- and D-pillar lining
t  Other transversal acceleration transmitter in the case of a deformation of the retaining points in the sensor area (floor pan area).
Additionally:
t  All automatic belt retractors with belt tensioners which have been triggered.
t  All automatic belt retractors with belt force limiters (depending on equipment version) which have been triggered
–  If you suspect that belt tensioner(s) and/or belt force limiter(s) has/have been triggered, connect a suitable vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system such as the vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system -VAS 505X-.
–  In the »Guided Diagnostic Process« under „15 - Airbag“ verify, if there the a crash entry recorded in the control unit for airbag .
–  Select the vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system -VAS 505X- and select „15 - Airbag“ in the vehicle menu system. When doing this the ignition must be switched on.
–  Read measured value block, display group 001:
–  Verify, whether for belt tensioner and / or belt force limiter the error "too large resistance" has been recorded at the same time. Belt tensioner(s) and/or belt force limiter(s) which have been triggered must fulfil both conditions. "Pre-condition: the airbag control unit has not been replaced yet and" and "resistance too large".
  W00-10343
If belt tensioners have been triggered the display will show „too high“.
  Note
t  The error message "resistance too high" may also lead to a cable interruption. In this case, there should usually be no crash entry.
t  Depending on the accident, the belt tensioner may have been triggered WITHOUT the belt force limiter being triggered. Note the disposal procedure for pyrotechnic components in the process.
t  Also observe the following points: Checking seat belts.
t  Triggered belt force limiters can be identified by the following characteristics:
t  Pin -1- and overhang -3- protrude from the automatic belt retractor housing.
  A01-0139
t  The tab -2 is no longer in a vertical position, but is facing outwards at an angle.
–  If components of the belt system are removed following an accident, renew the securing bolts for the belt system.
–  If necessary (by observation), also replace: All damaged components
–  After renewing airbag units or the control unit, affix stickers (only tear-off strips) to the registration card and return the registration card to the appropriate Sales Centre or to the importer for registration.
