Topping up gear oil in bevel box
Topping up gear oil in bevel box
–  If required, fill the oil for the pair of bevelled gears; Spare part number → Spare Spare parts catalogue.
Prerequisite:
l  Vehicle level.
–  To top up oil, use filler device -VAS 6291-.
   
–  Route the hose of the filling device -VAS 6291- to the outside behind the drive shaft to the right and through the wheel housing moulding.

Cover area beneath oil filler plug -arrow- with a cloth.
–  Remove oil filler plug -arrow- in bevel box.

–  Screw in adapter -VAS 6291/2--A- to stop.

–  You can use a standard commercially available 5 mm socket attachment for this purpose.

–  Insert the elbow -B- into the adapter -A-.
l  Hose must not sag.

–  Ensure that valve -arrow- is closed.
–  Connect the oil reservoir -A- to the filling device -VAS 6291-.
–  Open the valve -arrow- and hold oil reservoir as shown in illustration.
The bevel box will now be filled.
  Note
t  If bevel box has been properly filled, oil will have run out at adapter -A-.

t  If oil has still not run out, oil still has to be added.
–  If oil has run out at the adapter -A- then the oil container has to be positioned so that excess oil can run back into the container.

–  When no more oil flows back, remove filler device by pushing detent in -direction of arrow-.
–  Unscrew adapter -VAS 6291/2-.
–  Screw in the »old« oil fill screw and tighten slightly.
–  Start engine, engage a gear and allow gearbox to turn for approx. 2 minutes.
–  Stop engine and unscrew oil filler plug.
–  Check the oil level and, when applicable, top up with axle oil until the bottom edge of the filling bore.

–  Install new oil filler plug -arrow- and tighten to 15 Nm.
If oil should get on bevel box, carefully remove it.
–  Install the centre noise insulation → Exterior body installation work; Rep. gr.50.
