Note:

Seal the intake ports in the intake manifold lower part with a clean cloth.

  • ‒ Remove toothed belt guard upper part.

V13-1217
  • ‒ → Set camshaft sprocket to TDC No. 1 cylinder by turning the crankshaft. Mark on camshaft sprocket must align with arrow on toothed belt guard.
  • ‒ Release tensioning roller and take toothed belt off camshaft sprocket.
  • ‒ Turn crankshaft back slightly.
  • ‒ Remove cylinder head cover.
  • ‒ Remove camshaft sprocket. When loosening camshaft sprocket bolt counter-hold with 3036.
  • ‒ Pull off camshaft sprocket.
  • ‒ Remove woodruff key from camshaft.
  • ‒ First remove bearing caps 5, 1 and 3. Then loosen bearing caps 2 and 4 alternately and diagonally.

Installing

Conditions

  • ● The pistons must not be positioned at TDC.

Notes:

V15-0098
  • ◆ When installing the camshaft No. 1 cylinder cams must point upwards.
  • ◆ → When installing the bearing cap note offset, before installing camshaft fit bearing caps and determine fitting position.
  • ‒ Oil camshaft running surfaces.
  • ‒ Tighten bearing caps 2 and 4 alternately and
    diagonally to
        20 Nm.
  • ‒ Coat contact surfaces of bearing cap 1 lightly with sealant AMV 174 004 01.
  • ‒ Install bearing caps 5, 1 and 3 and also tighten to
        20 Nm.
  • ‒ Position oil seal with guide sleeve T10071 and press in with press sleeve T10071/1 and bolt T10071/2.
  • ‒ Insert woodruff key in camshaft.
  • ‒ Install camshaft sprocket and tighten to
        80 Nm
    (counter-hold with 3036).

Note:

When the camshaft is turned, the crankshaft must not be at TDC. Danger of damage to valves or piston crowns.

The rest of the assembly is basically a reverse of the dismantling sequence.

Installing toothed belt and adjusting valve timing .

Note:

When new tappets have been installed the engine must not be started for about 30 minutes. Hydraulic compensation elements must settle (otherwise valves will strike pistons).
