Renewing crankshaft oil seal - pulley end

Special tools and workshop equipment required

t	Oil seal extractor -3203-

t	Counterhold tool -3415- (only vehicles 06.00 ►)

t	Assembly tool -T10053-

t	Torque wrench (5... 50 Nm) -V.A.G 1331-

t	Torque wrench (40... 200 Nm) -V.A.G 1332-

Special tools and workshop equipment required

t  Counterhold tool -3099- (only vehicles ► 05.00) Removing –  Remove poly V-belt → Chapter. –  Remove toothed belt → Chapter. Vehicles ► 05.2000

–  Remove crankshaft toothed belt pulley. To do this, lock toothed belt pulley using counterhold tool -3099-.   Note When bolting on counterhold tool, place two washers between toothed belt pulley and counterhold tool. Vehicles 06.2000 ► –  Remove charge air pipe → Item or → Item. –  Unbolt charge air pipe bracket from sump → Item or → Item.

–  Remove crankshaft toothed belt pulley. To do this, lock toothed belt pulley using counterhold tool -3415-. Continuation for all vehicles –  To guide seal extractor, screw centre bolt into crankshaft to stop by hand. –  Screw inner part of oil seal extractor -3203- two turns (approx. 3 mm) out of outer part and lock using knurled screw.

–  Lubricate threaded head of oil seal extractor, place it in position and, exerting firm pressure, screw it into oil seal as far as possible. –  Loosen knurled screw and turn inner part against crankshaft until the oil seal is pulled out. Installing   Note The oil seal sealing lip must not be additionally oiled or greased. –  Remove oil residue from crankshaft journal using clean cloth.

–  Fit guide sleeve -T10053/1- onto crankshaft journal. –  Slide oil seal over guide sleeve onto crankshaft journal.

–  Using press sleeve -T10053-, press in onto stop with central bolt. Vehicles ► 05.2000

–  Install crankshaft toothed belt pulley and lock with counterhold tool -3099-.   Note When bolting on counterhold tool, place two washers between toothed belt pulley and counterhold tool. Vehicles 06.2000 ►

–  Install crankshaft toothed belt pulley and lock with counterhold tool -3415-. Continuation for all vehicles   Note t  The contact surfaces between toothed belt pulley and crankshaft must be free of oil. t  The centre bolt must be renewed. t  Thread and shoulder must be free of oil and grease. –  Tighten new centre bolt to 120 Nm and then 1/4 turn (90°) further (turning further can be done in several stages). Further assembly is basically the reverse of the dismantling sequence. –  Install and tension toothed belt → Chapter. –  Install poly V-belt → Chapter.
