Removing
–  Loosen the fasteners -2-, -3- and -5- and remove the front noise insulation.
–  Move lock carrier to service position → Rep. gr.50.
  Caution
Risk of breakage if the poly V-belt runs in the opposite direction when refitted.
Before removing, mark direction of operation of poly V-belt with chalk or felt-tipped pen in preparation for re-installation.
  A10-1307
–  To slacken poly V-belt turn tensioner in direction of -arrow-.
–  Lock tensioner with locking tool -T40098-.
–  Remove bolt -1- and take off tensioner for poly-V-belt from bracket for ancillaries.
–  Detach poly V-belt.
  A13-10637
–  Turn the vibration damper to „TDC“ position -arrow- using counterhold tool -T10355-.
l  Notch on vibration damper must align with arrow marking on cover for timing chains (bottom).
–  Remove the bolt for vibration damper using counterhold tool -T10355-.
–  Remove the vibration damper .
  Note
Only use the thrust piece -T10368- when screwing in the bolt for vibration damper to avoid damaging the splines.
  A13-10442
–  Fit bolt for vibration damper and thrust piece -T10368- again.
  Caution
Risk of damage to engine.
To avoid disturbing valve timing, do not turn crankshaft out of „TDC“ position when bolt for vibration damper is removed.
–  Remove idler roller -1-.
  A15-10771
–  Remove bolts -arrows- and detach guide tube for oil dipstick from timing chain cover.
  A15-10606
–  Unscrew bolts -1 to 15-.
  A15-10397
–  Lever off timing chain cover (bottom) (start at points -1 and 2-).
  Note
To avoid deformations, do not lever in the spaces between two bolt points.
Installing
l  Tightening torques → Chapter
t  Silicone sealant: → Electronic parts catalogue
  Note
t  Note the expiry date of the silicone sealant.
t  The cover must be installed within 5 minutes after applying the silicone sealant.
t  Replace the bolts tightened using goniometrics.
t  Always replace seals, gaskets and self-locking nuts
–  Spray sealing surface with sealant remover and wait for it to take effect.
–  Remove sealant remaining on cylinder head with flat scraper.
  WARNING
Protect eyes against injuries.
Wear safety goggles.
–  Mask oil seal on both sides with adhesive tape to make sure the seal remains clean.
  A15-10398
–  Remove remaining sealant from cover (e.g. with rotating plastic brush or similar).
–  Clean surfaces; they must be free of oil and grease.
–  Fit the cover using the old bolts tightening to 8 Nm.
–  Use feeler gauge to measure distance between cover and crankcase (max. distance is 0.2 mm).
  Note
t  Renew cover if distance exceeds 0.2 mm.
t  There is no need to measure clearance between the cover and the upper part of the sump, but the sealing surface should be checked to make sure it is flat.
  A13-0590
–  Check that both dowel pins are fitted in cover -arrows-.
  A15-10456
–  Cut off the tube nozzle on the front marking (diameter of the nozzle approximately. 3 mm).
  A17-0081
–  Apply silicone sealant onto clean sealing surface of cover, as illustrated.
t  Thickness of the sealant grub: 2 to 3 mm.
  Note
t  The cover must be installed within 5 minutes after applying the silicone sealant.
t  The bead of sealant must not be thicker than specified, otherwise excess sealant can enter the sump and obstruct the strainer in the oil intake pipe.
–  Immediately fit timing chain cover and tighten bolts; tightening sequence → Fig..
  Note
Let the sealing compound dry for approx. 30 minutes after fitting the cover. Only then should the engine be refilled with oil.
–  Install poly V-belt tensioner → Chapter.
–  Installing the Poly-V belt → Chapter.
–  Install the lock carrier → Rep. gr.50.
–  Install the front bumper trim and bumper → Rep. gr.63
–  Install front soundproofing → Rep. gr.66.
