  Note
The camshaft housing sealing surface must not be reworked.
–  First check whether a coded radio is fitted. If so, obtain anti-theft coding.
–  With ignition switched off, disconnect battery earth strap.
   
–  Unplug connector -1-.
–  Remove bolts -arrows-.
l  Gas hoses remain connected to gas rail.
–  Release the wiring from the fixing of the carrier cover and from the gas hoses.
–  Place the fuel rail „Gas rail“ aside and fix without removing the cables and hoses.

–  Remove bolts -arrows- and lift the carrier cover upwards and away.
–  Remove the air filter housing → Chapter.

–  Press catches -1- and pull air intake connecting piece out of air intake guide.
–  Remove spring-type clip -2- using hose clip pliers -VAS 6340- or spring-type clip pliers -VAS 5024A-.
–  Remove bolts for exhaust camshaft cover -3- and inlet camshaft cover -4- and pull covers out of camshaft housing.

–  Pull connectors off oil pressure switch -F1--1- and Hall sender -G40--2-.
–  Remove the two lifting eyes -3-.

–  Install left lifting eye -3- on cylinder head using bolts (M8 x 25) -1- and nuts (M10) -2-.
  Note
t  If the cylinder head is to be removed, follow procedure for removing and installing cylinder head → Chapter
t  The nuts (M10) are used to increase the distance between the lifting eye and the camshaft housing so that the camshaft housing can be removed and installed.
Tightening torque: 20 Nm
–  Remove expanded plastic components or seals in area of wing edges.

–  Remove plenum chamber cover -1- in exterior area → Body - front; Rep. gr.50.
–  Place support bracket -10 - 222 A- with adapter -10 - 222 A /8- behind bonnet stay.

–  Place adapter -10 - 222 A /8- behind bend -2-.
  Note
Plenum chamber cover is in contact with adapters -10 - 222 A /8-.
–  Hook support bracket -10-222 A- into right suspension eye only.
–  Remove distribution chain → Chapter.
–  Set the crankshaft to the TDC for cylinder 1. Then turn the crankshaft back about 45° against the direction of rotation of the engine and remove the camshaft sprockets together with the timing chain → Chapter.
–  Remove ignition coils. To do so, use the socket -T10094 A- → Chapter.
–  Remove cable guide of wiring harness from camshaft housing.
–  Pull oil dipstick out.
–  Loosen camshaft housing bolts from outside to inside, alternately and diagonally and remove.
–  Carefully lift camshaft housing off.
