Engine control unit: encoding

Note!

t	A 5-digit code should be displayed throughout the control unit identification.

t	If the code corresponding to the vehicle is not displayed or the control unit has been replaced, encode the control unit as follows.

Special tools and workshop equipment required

t	Fault reader -V.A.G 1551- with Lead -V.A.G 1551/3B-

Work sequence

–	Connect the -V.A.G 1551- (-V.A.G 1552-). Switch on the ignition and enter “address code” 01 to select the engine control unit. (Fault reader: Connecting and selecting the engine control unit → Chapter.).

The display reads:

–	Press 0 and 7 for the function “Encode the control unit” and press Q to confirm the entry.

The display reads:

–	Enter the code corresponding to the vehicle and press Q to confirm the entry.

The display shows the control unit identification and code, for example:

6K0 906 032K  ME 7.5.10           S134->

Code 00001                     WSC 00000

If this message is display, that means that an unauthorised code has been entered.

–

Press →.

–	Press 0 and 6 for the function “End data transmission” and press Q to confirm the entry.

–	Switch off the ignition.

Note!

t	The Motronic control unit will not use the code entered and displayed until the ignition has been switched off once. Erroneous encoding will cause the following:

t	Faulty driving performance (rough gear changes, abrupt downshifting, etc.).

t	Increased fuel consumption

t	Increased exhaust emissions

t	Nonexistent faults stored in the fault memory.

t	Certain functions are not carried out (lambda regulation, activated charcoal filter system activation, etc.).

t	On front wheel drive vehicles the acceleration slip reduction does not work (the ASR warning lamp lights up).

t	Reduced gearbox life
