Pre-catalyst lambda probe ageing: testing
Pre-catalyst lambda probe ageing: testing
Special tools and workshop equipment required
   
t  Fault reader -V.A.G 1551- or Vehicle systems checker -V.A.G 1552- with Lead -V.A.G 1551/3B-
Test conditions
l  Fuse number 18, OK.
l  Exhaust system, airtight between the catalyst and cylinder head.
l  Coolant temperature, 80 °C minimum → Anchor, display field 3.
Function test
–  Connect the -V.A.G 1551- (V.A.G. 1552). Start the engine and enter “address code” 01 to select the engine control unit. (Fault reader: Connecting and selecting the engine control unit → Chapter.).

The display reads:
–  Press 0 and 4 for the function “Start basic settings” and press Q to confirm the entry.

–  Press 0, 3 and 4 for “Display group number 34” and press Q to confirm the entry.

The display reads: (1...4 = display fields)
–  Press 0, 3 and 4 for “Display group number 34” and press Q to confirm the entry.
The display reads: (1...4 = display fields)
–  Depress the brake pedal and hold it down. The engine control unit raises engine revs to approx. 1200...1400 rpm.
–  Let the engine run at high revs until display field 4 changes from “Test OFF” to “Test ON”. The catalyst temperature in display field 2 must be at least 400 °C.
  Note!
This process may take a few minutes.
–  Check the amplitude ratio in display field 3: Target value: 0.70... 2.00
–  Let the engine run at high revs until display field 4 shows the target value “F1-S1 OK”.
–  Press →.
–  Press 0 and 6 for the function “End data transmission” and press Q to confirm the entry.
If the target values are not reached:
–  Run a road test to clean the lambda probe of any residues and repeat the test.
Take the necessary precautions during road tests → Chapter.
If the target values are still not reached:
–  Replace the pre-catalyst lambda probe -G39- → Item.
