Installation
Installation
Installation is carried out in the reverse sequence; note the following:
Do not tighten bolts securing trailing arm to wheel bearing housing until all other suspension components (especially spring and shock absorber) on that side are fitted. The wheel suspension must be in extended position before securing. The trailing arm and the wheel bearing housing will only then move into the required position -arrows-.
–  Install coil spring → Chapter.

Position: bolted joint longitudinal arm/steering knuckle
  Note
It is most important to follow the order shown when carrying out the following steps.
  N42-10019
–  Connect the longitudinal arm to the steering knuckle with bolts -2-, but do not tighten them yet.
–  Fit the link rod -3- on the longitudinal swinging arm, but do not tighten the nut yet.
–  Lower the wheel suspension again using the motor driven lift -V.A.G 1383 A-.
  N42-10015
–  Tighten the screws -2- of the longitudinal control arm at the proper tightening torque. Check the proper seating of the components → Fig..
  N42-10015
–  Fasten the link rod -1- to the steering knuckle and the stabiliser bar.
The steering knuckle may only be bolted when having the elevation measured prior to assembly, between the centre of the wheel hub and the lower rim of the wheel housing → Chapter.
  Note
  A42-0429
The washer -2- should be fitted so that between the washer and the splash plate -3- there is a space -arrow B-.
–  Tighten the bolt on the outer side of the drive shaft.
Hex bolt → Chapter
Twelve-point head bolt with ribbing → Chapter
Twelve-point head bolt without ribbing → Chapter
  Caution
During this step, vehicle must not be standing on its wheels.
The wheel bearing can be damaged by the weight of the vehicle if the bolt is loosened.

Distinctive features of the twelve-point head bolt with ribbing and the twelve-point head bolt without ribbing.
The twelve-point head bolts can be distinguished by the contact surfaces -arrow A- and -arrow B-.
I - Twelve-point head bolt with ribbing -arrow A-
II - Twelve-point head bolt without ribbing -arrow B-
–  Fit and secure wheel → Chapter.
