Pressing rear wheel bearing out and in with-V.A.G 1459 B-
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Thrust plate -40 - 105-
t  Torque wrench -V.A.G 1332-
t  Engine and gearbox jack -V.A.G 1383 A- with universal gearbox support -V.A.G 1359/2-
t  Thrust piece -VAS 6016-
t  -3-Puller -Kukko 204/2-

   
t  Foot pump with high pressure hose -V.A.G 1389 A/1-
If a hand pump -V.A.G 1389/1- is available in the workshop, this can be converted for use as a foot pump.
To do this, use conversion kit -V.A.G 1389/3-.

Vehicles with four wheel drive
–  First remove drive shaft.
Removing and installing drive shafts → Chapter.
Continuation for all vehicles
–  Remove wheel and raise vehicle.
Vehicles with front wheel drive
–  Remove bolt securing wheel bearing.
Continuation for all vehicles
–  Remove ABS speed sensor from wheel bearing housing.

–  Remove clip -1-.
–  Press brake lever -2- in direction of arrow and unhook brake cable -3-.
–  Remove brake carrier and brake caliper and tie to body with wire.

–  Unclip brake line from wishbone -arrows-.
–  Remove brake disc.
–  Unbolt cover plate and lay to side.
  Note
When removing the cover plate, make sure that the brake line is not bent!
–  Connect cover plate to wishbone
  Note
Position engine and gearbox jack -V.A.G 1383/A- under vehicle (risk of parts falling down as wheel hub and bearing are pulled out).
Pulling out wheel hub

–  Assemble bell-1-, hollow plunger cylinder-2- with pull rod and special nut-4-.

3 - High pressure hose with quick-action coupling
4 - Special nut -E-8-214- and pull rod
–  Build-up pressure with foot pump.
Pulling out wheel bearing
–  Remove circlip.

–  Fit trestle-1-, hollow plunger cylinder-2- with pull rod and special nut-3- and thrust piece-4- with shoulder towards bearing.
–  Operate pump and pull out the wheel bearing.

5 - High pressure hose with quick-action coupling
Pulling inner bearing race off hub
  N42-0452
Use only puller with clamp clip, e.g. -A--Kukko 204-2- (commercially available).
Pressing in wheel bearing
–  Grease drilling surfaces in wheel bearing housing completely with Molykote grease -N 052 723 00-.
Use grease sachet from repair set.
  V40-1218
–  Position wheel bearing -1-, thrust piece-2- (place collar in bearing) andhollow plunger cylinder-3- with pull rod on wheel bearing housing.
–  Fit thrust piece-4- with chamfer towards wheel bearing housing and special nut-5- from interior.
–  Press wheel bearing in by operating the pump.
–  Insert circlip with long nose pliers.

5 - Special nut -E-8-214- and pull rod
6 - High pressure hose with quick-action coupling
Press in wheel hub
  N42-0453
–  Position wheel hub -1- and hollow plunger cylinder-2- with pull rod on wheel bearing.
–  Assemble special nut-4- and thrust piece-3- from interior.
–  Press in hub by operating the pump.

5 - High pressure hose with quick-action coupling
Further assembly work is carried out in the reverse order.

t  Initially tighten diagonally to 10 Nm
