Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Torque spanner kit -SAT 8010-, see equivalent → Anchor
t  Tappet -T10089-, see equivalent → Anchor
t  Spanner -T20203-, see equivalent → Anchor
t  Extractor -T20143-, see equivalent → Anchor
t  Tray -T20173-, see equivalent → Anchor

Removing the right flanged shaft seal
The seals may be changed while the gear box is mounted.

Vehicles with intermediate shaft
–  Remove right articulated shaft: → Running gear, shafts, steering; Rep. Gr.40.
   
–  Unscrew the intermediate shaft -B- from the support frame, -arrows-, and take it out of the insert shaft of the gearbox.

–  Release the dust protection hood -arrow- with the screwdriver.

–  Unscrew the attachment bolt -arrow- from the right hand side insert shaft using the spanner -T20203-.
–  The bolt must be replaced.
–  Fit the tray -T20173- beneath gearbox.
–  Pull out the insert shaft.

–  Extract the insert shaft seal using the adapter -T20143/2-.
–  Lightly lubricate outer edge of new seal.

–  Fit new seal as far as it will go using tappet -T10089- without tilting it.
  E39-0220
–  Fill space between sealing lip and dustcap -arrow- with sealing grease → Parts catalogue.
The remainder of the installation is carried out in the reverse order to removal; noting the following:
–  Remove right articulated shaft: → Running gear, shafts, steering; Rep. Gr.40.

Vehicles with flanged shaft
–  Remove right articulated shaft: → Running gear, shafts, steering; Rep. Gr.40.
–  Fit the tray -T20173- beneath gearbox.
   
–  Unscrew the attachment bolt arrow from the left hand side insert shaft using the spanner -T20203-. Do this by tightening two screws on the flange and holding the shaft with a lever.
–  The bolt must be replaced.
–  Remove flanged shaft together with compression spring.

–  Remove sealing ring with adapter -T20143/2-.
–  Lightly lubricate outer edge of new seal.

–  Fit new seal as far as it will go using tappet -T10089- without tilting it.
  E39-0220
–  Fill space between sealing lip and dustcap -arrow- with sealing grease → Parts catalogue.
The remainder of the installation is carried out in the reverse order to removal; noting the following:
–  Insert the flanged shaft pushing against the spring and fix with a new bolt.
–  Remove right articulated shaft: → Running gear, shafts, steering; Rep. Gr.40.
