Repair instructions
For proper repair of the gearbox, it is important to work with the maximum possible care and absolute cleanlinesss, and use tools which are in perfect condition. Naturally, the normal basic safety regulations should be followed during repairs.
Here follows a series of general valid instructions for the different repair processes, which are repeated in other areas of the repair manual. They are valid for this repair manual.
Guided fault location, vehicle self-diagnosis and measurement module
   
t  Before commencing any repairs to the gearbox, the cause of the fault must be determined as accurately as possible using the central diagnosis -VAS 5051B- orcentral diagnosis -VAS 5052- in the operative modes “Guided fault location”, “Vehicle self-diagnosis” and “Measurement module”.
Gearbox
t  If the oil sump has been removed or if gear oil is needed, do not start the engine or tow the vehicle.
t  If the gearbox is replaced, check oil level → Chapter and top up if necessary. Filling amounts and oil type specifications → Chapter.
t  Thoroughly clean unions and adjacent areas before removing.
t  When assembling check that fitting sleeves are correctly positioned.
O-rings, seals, gaskets
t  O-rings, flanges and gaskets should always be replaced.
t  After removing gaskets, check the contact surfaces of the casing and shaft for feathering or damage caused by the removal process.
t  Always replace paper gaskets, completely disposing of the used gasket and thorougly cleaning the contact surfaces.
t  In order to fit flanges apply gear oil around the outer edge and on the sealing lip.
t  Coat the O-rings with gear oil or vaseline before fitting to avoid crushing during assembly.
t  Never use other lubricants in the gear oil area. Otherwise, the working of the hydraulic control of the gearbox may be damaged.
t  The open side of the flanges should face the liquid to be retained.
t  Follow rules for cleanliness: . → Chapter.
t  After assembly, check the level of the gear oil and top up if necessary: . → Chapter.
Safety catches
t  Do not overstretch the safety rings; replace if necessary.
t  Safety rings must be well seated in the groove.
Bolts, nuts
t  Bolts should be loosened in reverse order to the tightening sequence.
t  If no tightening sequence is specified, nuts and bolts used to fix covers and casings should be tightened and loosened in stages and in diagonal pairs.
t  Renew self-locking nuts.
t  The thread of bolts threaded with a fixing agent should be cleaned using a wire brush. Then, fit the bolts with paste → Parts catalogue.
t  The torque settings are valid for non-oiled nuts and bolts.
