Service charge with the battery charger -VAS 5900-
  WARNING
Injury risk! Observe safety precautions → Chapter.
  Caution
The operation mode „service charge“ is not permitted for SEAT vehicles because the voltage spikes may damage the onboard electronics.
If „service charge“ operation mode is used anyway the battery must be disconnected from the onboard system.
  WARNING
The batteries whose magic eye a clear yellow or clear colour should not be tested nor charged. Do not perform an auxillary start.
The risk of explosion exists upon testing and charging or performing an auxillary start.
These batteries must be renewed.
  Caution
For the charge process the operation mode corresponding to the battery must be selected → Instructions Manual battery chargerVAS 5900.
The „battery charger “ is used to charge:
The batteries with liquid electrolyte, whose magic eye admits the charge (black or green magic eye).
The „service charge (SERV)“ operating mode is only used in the case of sulphated batteries. The battery is charged during this operation with voltages > 14.4 V. In this way, a partial degradation of the sulphate layer may be produced. After the charge you must clearly check the indication in the magic eye colour before using the battery → Chapter.
Special tools and workshop equipment required

t  Battery charger -VAS 5900-
  Note
The battery must have a temperature of at least 10 °C.
–  Turn off the ignition and all electricity consumers.
–  Plug the charger into the mains. The previously selected mode will be shown on the screen → Chapter.
  W00-10182
–  Adjust with INFO the corresponding battery type.
The symbol -1- appears on the screen for the „wet battery service charge“ or the symbol -2- for the „standard gel battery / Absorbed glass mat battery service charge“.
–  Adjust the battery capacity (Ah) of the battery to be charged using the respective „Up“ or „Down“ buttons.
–  Connect the red charge clamp „+“ of the charger to the positive pole of the battery.
  Note
On vehicles with Start / Stop function and battery monitor control unit -J367-, the black charging terminal „-“ must be connected to the body earthing. Connecting it to battery negative terminal will cause start/stop system to malfunction.
–  Connect the black charge terminal „-“ to the negative pole of the battery.
The charger will recognize the nominal voltage of the battery connected (6 V, 12 V or 24 V) and automatically begin the charge operation.

As soon as the charge status is approx. 80 - 85% of the battery voltage is reached, the charger starts the „final charge“. -1- appears on the display in the fourth column. The battery is available for operation.
  Note
The success of the „service charge“ depends on the level of sulphate formation in the battery.
Possible faults and troubleshooting:
1 - The battery voltage displayed does not correspond to the nominal voltage:
–  Press and hold the button „Up“ or „Down“, until the charge operation begins.
2 - The battery voltage displayed does not correspond to the nominal voltage-the charge operation has already begun:
–  Press START / STOP twice.
–  Press and hold the button „Up“ or „Down“, until the charge operation begins.
3 - The charger does not detect any battery if the battery voltage is less than 2 V.
The value displayed does not change.
The operation mode and the amperes / hour (Ah) selected are displayed.
Finish charging the battery:
–  Press START / STOP.
–  Remove the black charge terminal „-“ of the charger from the negative pole of the battery.
–  Remove the red charge terminal „+“ of the charger from the positive pole of the battery.
–  Unplug the charger from the mains.
