Removing
l  Cylinder head installed.
–  Detach the outer -1- and inner -2- engine covers, by pulling them evenly upwards.
–  Remove toothed belt → Chapter.
–  Removing the tandem pump → Chapter.
  Note
The hoses can remain connected on the tandem pump.
  E10-10038
–  Extract the counterhold -3359-.
–  Unscrew the bolts -arrows- of the camshaft hub.
–  Pull camshaft sprocket off hub.
  A13-0358
–  Loosen the securing bolt -1- of the hub, use the counterhold -T10051- .
–  Loosen by 2 turns the attachment bolt of the hub.
  N15-0271
–  Fit the extraction tool -T10052A- and line up with the openings of the hub and screw down the bolts -1- .
–  Hold the hexagonal (e/c 30) of the extraction tool -T10052A- and tighten the bolt -2- evenly until the hub comes away from the camshaft cone.
–  Remove the hub cone from the camshaft.
–  Removing the cylinder head cover → Chapter.
  E15-10051
–  Mark the injector rocker arm axles to avoid interchanging them and thus avoid performing a basic setting of the unit injectors -arrow-.
–  Loosen the outer bolts on the rocker arm shafts first -1- followed by the interior bolts -2-.
–  Remove the rocker arm shafts.
  A15-0531
–  First unscrew the bearing caps -1-, -3- and -5-.
–  Then loosen the bearing caps -2- and -4- alternately in diagonal sequence.
  Note
t  Make sure that the camshaft bearing shells are not interchanged.
t  Mark allocation of camshaft bearing shells on rear with a waterproof felt-tip pen.
–  Extract the camshaft.
Installing
  A15-0532
Fit in reverse order from removal, remembering the following:
Installation is carried out in the reverse order, noting the following:
–  Ensure that the crankshaft is positioned at TDC.
l  The crankshaft sprocket is locked with the crankshaft stop -T10100- in the TDC of cylinder 1.
  Note
t  Make sure that the used camshaft bearing shells are not interchanged (note marking).
t  When installing the camshaft, make sure that the retaining lugs on the bearing shells are correctly seated in the bearing caps and the cylinder head.
  A13-10235
–  Oil the camshaft contact surfaces.
–  Install camshaft in TDC position for cylinder 1:
l  The cams for cylinder 1 must point upwards on camshaft -arrows-.
  Note
  A15-0530
If the bearing caps are fitted with the cylinder head removed, first fit the spacing washers for the cylinder head bolts → Item.
–  Tighten bearing caps -2- and -4- alternately in diagonal sequence.
  A15-0532
–  Apply a thin and even coat of sealant to surfaces -1- of bearing caps 1 and 5; sealant → Electronic parts catalogue.
  Note
Make sure no sealant gets into the grooves -arrows- or onto the other surfaces.
  N15-0270
–  Install bearing caps -1-, -3- and -5- and tighten.
l  Bearing cap -5- must be flush with the outer edge of the cylinder head, otherwise the tandem pump may leak.
–  Fit the seal for the camshaft → Chapter.
  A15-0532
–  Before fitting the rocker lever shaft, check if the spherical head pins -1- and O-rings -2- are in the injector pump units
  A15-10179
–  Position injector rocker arm axles. Here, the marks made when removing must be taken into account -arrows-.
–  Tighten, respectively, first the interior bolts -2- and then the exterior bolts -1- in various steps.
  A15-0531
–  Fit the camshaft hub.
–  Tighten the bolt -1- to 100 Nm and counterhold using the retention tool -T10051- to do this.
  N15-0271
–  Slide the camshaft sprocket onto the hub.
l  The cogged part -arrow- of the camshaft cogwheel should face upwards.
–  Fit the camshaft sprocket bolts by hand -1- without any play as far as the camshaft sprocket.
–  Immobilise the hub using the retention tool -3359-.
–  Fitting notched belt → Chapter.
–  Fit the tandem pump → Chapter.
–  If the rocker arm shafts or the ball studs or even the adjustment screws were replaced, the unit injectors need adjustment → Chapter.
–  Install cylinder head cover → Chapter.
  Note
t  After fitting the camshaft, the engine should not be started for approx. 30 minutes. The hydraulic followers must be allowed to sit in to position (otherwise, the valves will hit the pistons).
t  After carrying out work on the valve control, rotate the engine gently 2 times to ensure that, before starting the engine, no valve is down.
