Testing the compression
Testing the compression
Test condition
l  Oil temperature at least 30 °C
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Flexible-head wrench for glow plugs
t  Adapter, e.g. -V.A.G 1381/12-
t  Compression tester, e. g. -V.A.G 1763-
Test sequence
–  Pull out the central plug for the unit injectors.
–  Remove all glow plugs using a flexible-head wrench.

–  Screw in adapter -V.A.G 1381/12- instead of the glow plugs.
–  Check compression pressure with compression tester -V.A.G 1763-.
  Note
Use of tester ⇒ Operating Instructions.
–  Operate starter until the tester no longer indicates a pressure rise.
  N15-0292
Compression readingsPressure
New engine2.5...3.1 MPa (25.0...31.0 bar)
Wear limit1,9 MPa (19,0 bar)
Max. permissible difference between the cylinders0.5 MPa (5.0 bar)

–  Screw in glow plugs with flexible-head wrench.
   Tightening torque: 15 Nm
–  Connect central plug connection for unit injectors and edge connector for glow plugs.
–  Interrogate and if necessary erase fault memory of engine control unit → Vehicle diagnostic tester.
–  After deleting the fault memory of the engine control unit the readiness code must be checked, if necessary re-generated → Vehicle diagnostic tester.
  Note
Faults are stored as a result of separating the central plug connection for the unit injector. Therefore interrogate the fault memory and delete it if necessary → Vehicle diagnostic tester.
