Securing the engine to the assembly stand > < Removing and installing engine

Removing
  Note
t  The engine is removed downwards together with the gearbox.
t  Contact surfaces on the lift platform → BookletFabia.
t  All cable straps that have been loosened or cut open when the engine was removed must be fitted again in the same location when it is installed again.
t  Fuel hoses at the engine must only be secured with spring-type clips. The use of clamp-type or screw-type clips is not allowed.
t  Use pliers for spring strap clips to fit the spring strap clips.
t  Pay attention to the correct assignment of the plugs, if necessary mark.
t  Additional instructions when undertaking assembly work on the air-conditioning system → Chapter.
Work procedure
–  On models fitted with a coded radio set, pay attention to the coding; determine if necessary.
–  Disconnect the earth strap from the battery with the ignition off.
–  Open the cap of the coolant expansion reservoir.
   
–  Remove noise insulation -arrows-.
–  Remove drive shaft to the right → Chassis; Rep. gr.40.
–  Unscrew the left drive shaft from the gearbox flange.
–  Raise drive shaft on the left and secure.
–  Remove pre-exhaust pipe with catalytic converter → Chapter.
–  Place a catch pan under the engine.
–  Drain coolant → Chapter.

–  Remove engine cover.
   To do so pull the front and rear engine cover upwards with a sudden motion -arrows-.
–  Remove air filter with intake hose → Chapter.
–  Remove battery and battery tray → Electrical System; Rep. gr.27.
–  Unscrew the generator cables from the battery cover and remove the wiring loom from the holder.

–  Unplug connector -1- from the engine control unit.
–  Disconnect plug connections -2- and -3-.
–  Unclip cable clip -4--arrows-.
–  Remove earth lead on upper starter screw.
–  Remove the vacuum hose from the brake servo unit.
–  Disconnect the vacuum hose to the exhaust-gas recirculation valve on the non-return valve.

–  Remove coolant hoses -1-, -2- and -3- from the heat exchanger support.
–  Remove all further coolant hoses:
t  from top and bottom of radiator
t  Ventilation hose at the top of the compensation bottle
t  Return hose from the compensation bottle on the coolant pipe

–  Remove Bowden cable support -arrows-.
–  Disconnect the hose line -A- from the gearbox holder.
–  Remove slave cylinder -B-, lay to one side and secure with wire. Do not open line system.
  Note
Do not depress the clutch pedal.

–  Remove selector cable -A- with relay lever. To do so remove the circlip -arrow 1- from the relay lever.
–  Remove the shift cable -B- with the gearshift lever. To do so unscrew nut -arrow 2-.
–  Raise control cables and attach.

–  Remove fuel hoses -arrows- at the injection pump, close with clean plugs and lay aside.
–  Disconnect vacuum hose on mechanical exhaust-gas recirculation valve.

–  Unplug connector -1- from the generator wiring loom.
–  Disconnect plug -2- from the reversing light switch -F4-.

–  Unbolt the pendulum support -arrows-.
Vehicles with air conditioning
  Caution
Do not open the refrigerant circuit of the air conditioning system.
–  Remove V-ribbed belt → Chapter.
–  Remove connector from the AC compressor.
–  Remove AC compressor with connected refrigerant lines, lay to the left and attach to the lock carrier.
–  Remove AC generator.
–  Lay AC compressor to the right and again attach to lock carrier.
Continued for all vehicles
–  Insert engine mount -T10012- into engine/gearbox jack, e.g. -V.A.G 1383 A-.
  S34-0337
–  Screw engine mount -T10012- to the cylinder block with fixing nuts and M10 bolts to 40 Nm.
–  Slightly raise the engine and gearbox with the engine/gearbox jack.

–  Unscrew the screws of the engine mount from the top -arrows A-.
  Note
Use the double ladder for removing the fixing bolts.

–  Unscrew the gearbox mount from the gearbox support bracket from the top -arrows-.
–  Carefully lower the engine with gearbox.
   While doing so pivot the gearbox slightly forwards.
  Note
When lowering the engine with the gearbox proceed with great care. There must always be a clearance from the adjoining components, especially in the area of the intake manifold flap.
