Removing and installing wheel bearing housing (as of CW 12 2008)
  Note
t  The running gears have different versions of wheel bearing housings and floating caliper brakes.
t  The special tools, test and measuring equipment as well as aids required for removing and installing the wheel bearing housing of running gears with FS-III as well as C54 brakes are identical.
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Engine/gearbox jack with adapter, e.g. - V.A.G 1383/A- with -V.A.G 1359/2-
t  Spreader -3424-
t  Extractor -MP6-425 (3283)-
t  Ball joint extractor -3287A-
t  Polycarbamide grease -G 052 142 A2-
Removing:
–  Unscrew twelve-point nut for securing the drive shaft → Chapter
–  Remove wheel.

–  Unscrew nut -1-.
–  Pull out coupling rod -3- from the anti-roll bar -2-.
–  Remove ABS speed sensor (vehicles with ABS) → Chapter.
  S48-0113
Vehicles fitted with FS-III floating caliper brake
–  Removing the caps from the brake caliper guide bolts.
–  Unscrew and remove the two guide bolts -arrows- from the brake caliper.
–  Remove brake caliper or brake carrier with brake caliper and secure with wire in such a way that the weight of the brake caliper does not burden or damage the brake line.
  S40-0176
Vehicles fitted with C54-II floating caliper brake
–  Release screws -1-.
–  Remove brake caliper or brake carrier with brake caliper and secure with wire in such a way that the weight of the brake caliper does not burden or damage the brake line.
Continued for all vehicles
–  Remove the outer joint of the drive shaft from the wheel-bearing housing → Chapter and tie up drive shaft to body.
  S40-0197
–  Screw up nut -1- sufficiently so that the ball joint extractor is supported on the nut.
–  Use puller to remove track rod/track rod end -2- from the steering arm.
–  Screw off the nut from the track rod end.
–  Pull the track rod end out of the steering arm.
–  Tie up the track rod to the top.
–  Position the engine and gearbox jack with adapter below the wheel-bearing housing.
  N48-0601
–  Separate the screwed connection wheel-bearing housing/suspension strut -arrow-.
  S40-0288
–  Insert the spreader -3424- in the slot on the wheel-bearing housing.
–  Turn the spreader -3424- with ratchet 90° and remove ratchet.
–  Press the brake disc by hand towards the suspension strut.
Otherwise the shock absorber may clamp in the opening of the wheel-bearing housing.
–  Remove the wheel-bearing housing from the shock-absorber tube and lower with engine/gearbox jack with adapter.
Installing:
–  Raise up the wheel-bearing housing using the engine/gearbox jack with adapter and position on the shock absorber pipe.
  Note
Never press on the steering joint with the engine/gearbox jack with adapter.
–  Insert the new suspension strut/wheel-bearing housing screw.
–  With one's hand on the brake disc press in the direction of the suspension strut and make sure that the shock-absorber tube in the bore hole of the wheel-bearing housing does not become tilted.
  S40-0179
–  Remove spreader -3424-.
  S40-0179
–  Tighten the screwed connection wheel-bearing housing/suspension strut with a new nut -arrow-.
–  Install track rod with track rod end into the steering arm and tighten.
–  Install brake caliper in reverse order to removal depending on brake caliper type and tighten.
–  Install ABS speed sensor (vehicles with ABS) → Chapter.
–  Insert the outer joint of the drive shaft into the wheel-bearing housing → Chapter.
  S40-0288
–  Insert coupling rod -3- into the stabilizer -2-.
–  Tighten the nut -1-.
–  Installing and tightening the wheel.
–  Screw in twelve-point nut for securing the drive shaft → Chapter.
  Note
It is necessary to perform a vehicle alignment in the event of → Chapter.
–  Perform a test drive.
–  Check the steering wheel position during the test drive.
  Caution
If after the test drive and with the front wheels pointing straight ahead the steering wheel is off straight, perform a chassis alignment → Chapter.
