  Caution
If considerable quantities of metal swarf or abrasion is found when carrying out engine repairs, this can be subject to damage to the crankshaft and conrod bearings. In order to avoid consequential damage, after the repair perform the following tasks:
Carefully clean the oil galleries.
Replace engine oil cooler.
Replace oil filter element.
  Note
Before assembly oil all bearing and contact surfaces.
1 - Cylinder head with camshaft housing
q   removing and installing → Chapter
q   Camshaft housing with integrated camshaft bearings
2 - Cylinder block
q   made of aluminium
q   Summary of components → Chapter
q   Piston and conrod - Summary of components → Chapter
3 - Support
q   for tensioning device and AC compressor
4 - Sliding rail
q   for timing chain
5 - Sprocket
q   for oil pump drive and timing chain
q   Clamping surfaces must be free of oil and grease.
q   removing and installing → Chapter
6 - Drive chain
q   for oil pump
q   mark running direction (installed position) before removing
q   removing and installing → Chapter
7 - 25 Nm
8 - Chain tensioner with tensioning rail and tensioning spring
q   for oil pump drive
q   Tightening torque: 15 Nm
q   replace completely
9 - Oil pan
q   removing and installing → Chapter
10 - 13 Nm
11 - 15 Nm
12 - Sprocket
q   for oil pump
q   Counterhold sprocket with counterholder -T10172-
13 - Cover
14 - 20 Nm + torque a further 90° (1/4 turn)
q   replace
15 - Piston
q   for control chain tensioner
16 - Pressure spring
17 - Chain tensioner
q   for timing chain
18 - 9 Nm
19 - Timing case
q   removing and installing → Chapter
q   to facilitate installation, screw two pin screws -M6 x 80- into the camshaft housing and the cylinder block
q   to better guide the timing case, position the oil pan with two screws
20 - Bushing
q   Clamping surfaces must be free of oil and grease.
21 - Crankshaft-belt pulley
q   Clamping surfaces must be free of oil and grease.
q   Removing and installing ribbed V-belt → Chapter
22 - Fixing screw
q   for crankshaft - belt pulley
q   replace
q   The clamping surface of the fixing screw must be free of grease and oil.
q   insert oiled (thread)
q   tighten → Chapter
23 - O-ring
q   replace
24 - 10 Nm
q   M6x45 mm
25 - 50 Nm
26 - 10 Nm
q   M6x22 mm
q   insert using locking agent -D 000 600 A2-
27 - To intake manifold
28 - 10 Nm
29 - The vacuum regulating valve (PCV valve)
q   with ventilation hose
30 - 10 Nm
31 - Oil separator
32 - Gasket
q   replace
33 - 50 Nm + torque a further 90° (1/4 turn)
q   replace
q   Counterhold sprocket with counterholder -T10172-
34 - Tensioning rail
35 - Sprocket
q   for inlet camshaft
q   removing and installing → Chapter
36 - Timing chain
q   removing and installing → Chapter
37 - Sprocket
q   for exhaust camshaft
q   removing and installing → Chapter
38 - Guide bolt
q   Tightening torque: 20 Nm
