Removing
Requirements
l  Engine temperature should not exceed 35 °C, because the cylinder head could be twisted when slackening the screws.
–  Disconnect the battery-earth strap with the ignition off → Electrical System; Rep. gr.27.
–  Remove engine cover → Chapter.
   
–  Remove charge-air pipe at the top -1- with connecting hose -2--arrows-.
–  Remove the air guide from the lock carrier and the air filter:
t  For engine with engine identification characters BNM, BNV → Chapter.
t  For engine with engine identification characters BMS → Chapter.
–  Remove air filter with intake hose → Chapter.
–  Remove charge air pipe with connecting hose to turbocharger:
t  For engine with engine identification characters BNM, BNV → Chapter.
t  For engine with engine identification characters BMS → Chapter.
–  Disconnect plug connection of the glow plugs.
–  Unscrew oil feed line for exhaust turbocharger (also at oil filter holder and from the mount):
t  For engine with engine identification characters BNM, BNV → Chapter.
t  For engine with engine identification characters BMS → Chapter.
For engine with engine code BNM, BNV
–  Remove exhaust gas recirculation radiator from exhaust manifold and intake mainfold → Chapter.
–  Unscrew the induction pipe from the intake manifold and lay to the side with connected hoses → Chapter.
–  Remove front exhaust pipe with catalytic converter from exhaust manifold → Chapter.
–  Remove the sound dampening system → Body Work; Rep. gr.50.
–  Remove charge air connection hose between turbocharger and charge air pipe at bottom → Chapter.
For engine with engine identification characters BMS
  Note
Only remove the anchoring clip and the pre-exhaust pipe with diesel particle filter from the exhaust gas turbocharger.
–  Remove the pre-exhaust pipe with diesel particle filter from the exhaust gas turbocharger → Chapter.
–  Remove the sound dampening system → Body Work; Rep. gr.50.
Continued for all vehicles:
–  Pull out vacuum hoses from the turbocharger:
t  For engine with engine identification characters BNM, BNV → Chapter.
t  For engine with engine identification characters BMS → Chapter.
–  Remove oil feed line for the exhaust turbocharger:
t  For engine with engine identification characters BNM, BNV → Chapter.
t  For engine with engine identification characters BMS → Chapter.
–  Drain coolant → Chapter.
–  Use hand vacuum pump and bleeder tank to extract the fuel at the return-flow pipe of the tandem pump → Chapter.

–  Remove fuel hoses -1- and -4-.
–  Remove coolant hose -5-.
–  Remove central plug connection -2- for pump-nozzle units.
–  Disconnect plug -3- at fuel temperature sender -G81-.

–  Disconnect coolant hose -1- from T-piece and the coolant hoses -2- and -3- from the connection fittings.
–  Disconnect plug -4- from coolant temperature sender -G62-.

–  Remove the coolant hose -3- from the support -4-.
–  Pull off vacuum hose -6- from tandem pump -5-.
–  Detach coolant hoses to exhaust gas recirculation radiator from connection fitting.
  S10-0150
–  Install supporting device -MP 9-200 (10-222A)- with positioned spindles as shown and support the engine with spindle -B-.
–  Carefully raise the engine with spindle -B-.
–  Removing toothed belt → Chapter.
–  Remove camshaft sprocket and hub → Chapter.
–  Remove toothed belt tensioning pulley → Chapter (Position 40).

–  Unscrew screw -3- and remove Hall sender -G40- from cylinder head.
–  Screw out screws -2- and -4-.
  S15-0451
–  Screw bracket -T10014- into the threaded holes in the area of the coolant pump in the cylinder block. Tightening torque: 20 Nm.
–  Support the engine and carefully raise with spindle -A- and through this release the spindle -B-.
–  Remove spindle -B-.
–  Remove cylinder head cover → Chapter.

–  Follow the specified order for loosening cylinder head bolts.
–  Raise cylinder head and remove sideways past the toothed belt guard.
