Reading measured value block - Initiating basic setting of system > < Reading readiness code

Generate readiness code
Special tools, test equipment as well as aids required
t  Vehicle system tester -V.A.G 1552 - with cable -V.A.G 1551/3-, 3A, 3B or 3C
Test conditions
l  Vehicle stopped
l  On vehicles with an automatic gearbox the selector lever must be in position “P” or “N”
l  All electrical components such as headlights and rear window heater, must be switched off.
l  AC switched off
l  Coolant temperature at least 80°C, display group 004, display field 3 → Chapter
Procedure
–  Connect vehicle system tester -V.A.G 1552-, switch on ignition and select address word 01 “Engine electronics” → Chapter.
  Note
It is essential to carry out the individual steps in the correct order, otherwise the readiness code cannot be successfully generated.
1. step: Interrogating fault memory
–  Enter function 02 “Interrogate fault memory” and confirm with Q key.
   
The number of stored faults, or “No fault recognised” appears in the display.
If a fault is stored in the memory:
–  Rectify the faults displayed by referring to the fault table → Chapter.
If no fault is stored:
–  Press key.
2. step: Erasing fault memory
–  Select function 05 “Erase fault memory” and confirm with key Q.
  Note
Readiness code is erased each time the fault memory is erased.
 
X No fault recognised!
Readout on display:
  Note
If the ignition is switched off between “Interrogating fault memory” and “Erasing fault memory”, the fault memory is then not erased.
–  Press key.
3. step: Adapt the engine control unit to the throttle valve control unit
–  Select function 04 “Initiate basic setting” and display group 060.
 
Vehicle system test                   ->
Fault memory erased!
Check values in display fields 3 and 4:
Specification in display field 3: 0...8
Specification in display field 4: ADP runs, ADP o.k.
If the specified values are reached:
–  Press key C.
4. step: Adjusting the kick-down function → Note
1)  For models with an automatic gearbox
–  Enter display group number 063 and confirm with key Q.
 
System in basic setting 60            ->
14 %    85 %       8       ADP runs
Press down the accelerator pedal to the stop and hold it there.
–  Read off the indicated value in display block 4. Specified value: ADP o.k.
  Note
The message “Kickdown ADP running” will be displayed during the adjustment work. Once the adjustment has been completed successfully “ADP OK” will be displayed.
If the specified value is reached:
–  Press key C.
5. step: Check operating conditions of the lambda control
–  Start engine and enter the address word 01 “Engine electronics” → Chapter.
–  Select function 04 for “Basic setting” and confirm with key Q.
For vehicles ? 04.01
–  Increase engine speed to 1800...2200 rpm.
For vehicles 05.01 ?
–  Depress brake pedal and accelerator simultaneously. After pushing the accelerator pedal down, the engine speed is raised to 1800...2200 rpm by the engine control unit.
For all vehicles
–  Enter display group number 030 and confirm with key Q.
 
System in basic setting 63            ->

–  Check operating state of lambda control, display fields 1 and 2:
Specification in display field 1: 111
Specification in display field 2: 110
  Note
t  This may take a few minutes.
t  The first position in the 3-digit numerical block changes initially between 0 and 1 (lambda probe heater OFF and ON).
t  The lambda control of lambda probe downstream of catalyst is not active without engine load and the third position in display field 2 indicates 0.
If the specified values are not reached:
–  Interrogate the fault memory → Chapter.
If the specified values are reached at least once:
–  Press key C.
6. step: Diagnosis of lambda probe ageing before catalyst
–  Enter display group number 034 and confirm with key Q.
 
System in basic setting 30            ->
111           110                       
–  Keep running engine at high speed, the display in display field 4 will then switch from “Test OFF” to “Test ON”. Catalytic converter temperature in display field 2 must be at least 350°C. The period duration in display field 3 must be greater than 0.5.
  Note
This may take a few minutes.
–  Run engine at high speed until display field 4 indicates specified value “B1-S1 O.K.”.
If the specified value is not reached:
–  Interrogate the fault memory → Chapter.
If the specified value is reached:
–  Press key C.
7. step: Check lambda probe preparation downstream of catalytic converter
–  Enter display group number 036 and confirm with key Q.
 
System in basic setting 34            ->
2000 rpm    350.0 °C    1.91    B1 S1 OK
–  Keep running engine at high speed, the display in display field 2 will then switch from “Test OFF” to “Test ON”.
–  Run engine at high speed until display field 2 indicates specified value “B1-S2 O.K.”.
If the specified value is not reached:
–  Interrogate the fault memory → Chapter.
If the specified value is reached:
–  Press key C.
8. step: Diagnosis of the lambda control system
–  Enter display group number 037 and confirm with key Q.
 
System in basic setting 36            ->
0.640 V                         B1-S2 O.K
Keep running engine at high speed, the display in display field 4 will then switch from “Test OFF” to “Test ON”.
–  Run engine at high speed until display field 4 indicates specified value “System OK”.
If the specified value is not reached:
–  Interrogate the fault memory → Chapter.
If the specified value is reached:
–  Press key C.
9. step: Diagnosis of lambda probe ageing after catalyst
–  Enter display group number 043 and confirm with key Q.
 
System in basic setting 37            ->
19.5 %     0.435 V     0.000    Syst. O.K
Keep running engine at high speed, the display in display field 4 will then switch from “Test OFF” to “Test ON”. The cat. temperature in display field 2 must be of at least 350 °C.
–  Run engine at high speed until display field 4 indicates specified value “B1-S2 O.K.”.
If the specified value is not reached:
–  Interrogate the fault memory → Chapter.
If the specified value is reached:
–  Press key C.
10. step: Diagnosis of catalytic converter
–  Enter display group number 046 and confirm with key Q.
–  Keep running engine at idling speed.
  Note
t  Engine speed during the test sequence:
t  ? 04.01 2200...2600 rpm.
t  05.01 ? Depress brake and accelerator pedal simultaneously
 
System in basic setting 43            ->
2000 rpm   450.0 °C   0.435 V   B1-S2 O.K
The display in the display field 4 changes first from “Test OFF” to “Test ON”. The cat. temperature in display field 2 must be of at least 440 °C.
  Note
This may take a few minutes.
–  Run engine at idling speed until display field 4 indicates specified value “Cat B1 O.K.”.
If the specified value is not reached:
–  Interrogate the fault memory → Chapter.
If the specified value is reached:
–  Press key C.
11. step: Diagnosis of activated charcoal filter system (tank vent system)
–  Enter display group number 070 and confirm with key Q.
 
System in basic setting 46            ->
2000 rpm    550.0 °C    0.07   cat B1 O.K
Keep running engine at high speed, the display in display field 4 will then switch first from “Test OFF” to “Test ON”.
–  Leave engine running at idling speed until “TVV o.k.” is displayed in display field 4.
  Note
If the test is not initiated or if the display jumps from “Test ON” to “Test OFF”, press accelerator pedal briefly and the test will start again.
If the specified value is not reached:
–  Interrogate the fault memory → Chapter.
If the specified value is reached:
–  Press key C.
12. step: Diagnosis of secondary air injection system
  Note
During diagnosis of the secondary air injection system the secondary air pump will run for a few seconds.
–  Enter display group number 077 and confirm with key Q.
–  Suddenly press and release (briefly accelerate to 2500 rpm).
 
System in basic setting 70            ->
0.0 %       -        0.0 %        TVV OK
–  Check the readout in the display field 4, the display changes first from “Test OFF” to “Test ON”.
–  Leave engine running at idling speed until “Syst. OK” is displayed in display field 4.
  Note
This diagnosis will last approximately 60 seconds.
If the specified value is not reached:
–  Interrogate the fault memory → Chapter.
13. step: Reading readiness code
–  Read out readiness code → Chapter.
