Check camshaft adjustment valve 1
Check camshaft adjustment valve 1
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Vehicle system tester -V.A.G 1552- with cable -V.A.G 1551/3-
t  Test box -V.A.G 1598/22-
t  Hand-held multimeter e.g. -V.A.G 1526 A- or multimeter -V.A.G 1715-
t  Measuring tool set - V.A.G 1594 A-

Fitting location of valve.
Test sequence
–  Switch on ignition.
–  Initiate an actuator diagnosis (function 03) and select the camshaft adjustment → Chapter.
  A15-0130
Readout on display:
The valve must click clearly audible when actuating the camshaft adjustment.
If the valve does not click, switch off ignition.

Actuator diagnosis                    ->
Camshaft adjustment 1
–  Disconnect plug from the exhaust gas recirculation valve 1 - N205-.
–  Perform resistance measurement between the contacts of the valve with -V.A.G 1526 A-.
Specified value: 10 to 18 Ω
–  If the nominal value is not reached, replace the camshaft adjustment valve 1.
Check voltage supply of the camshaft adjustment valve 1 -N205-
–  Disconnect plug at the camshaft adjustment valve 1 -N205 -.
  S24-0200
–  Connect voltage tester -V.A.G 1527- with cable from measuring tool set -V.A.G 1594 A- to contact 1 of plug and to engine mass.
–  Switch on the starter motor for a short time. While doing so, the engine can also start.
The voltage tester must light up.
If the voltage tester does not occur, perform the following tests:
–  Check fuse for the camshaft adjustment valve 1.
–  Check the cable of contact 1 of the fuse for camshaft adjustment plug for interruption → Current Flow Diagrams, Electrical Fault Finding, Fitting Locations.
–  Test fuel pump relay and control → Chapter.
Test control of the camshaft adjustment
  S24-0201
–  Connect voltage tester -V.A.G 1527- with cable from measuring tool set -V.A.G 1594 A- to contact 1 (positive) and contact 2 of the valve plug.
–  Initiate an actuator diagnosis and select the camshaft adjustment → Chapter.
  S24-0195
Readout on display:
The voltage tester must flash for the actuation of the camshaft adjustment.

Actuator diagnosis                    ->
Camshaft adjustment 1
–  If the voltage tester does not light up or lights up continuously, connect test box -V.A.G. 1598/22- at wiring loom to engine control unit → Chapter.
–  If the voltage tester lights up continuously, check the wiring between contact 2 of the plug to contact 55 of the test box for short circuit to earth → Current Flow Diagrams, Electrical Fault Finding, Fitting Locations.
–  If the voltage tester does not flash, check the wiring between contact 2 of the plug to contact 55 of the test box for short circuit to earth → Current Flow Diagrams, Electrical Fault Finding, Fitting Locations.
–  If necessary eliminate earth and/or line interruption.
–  If there is neither a line interruption nor a short-circuit; replace engine control unit → Chapter.
–  If the wiring is O.K., replace the mechanical camshaft adjuster → 1.8-ltr/92kW Engine, Mechanics; Rep. Gr.15.
