Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Vehicle system tester -V.A.G 1552- with cable -V.A.G 1551/3-
t  Test box -V.A.G 1598/22-
t  Hand-held multimeter e.g. -V.A.G 1526 A- or multimeter -V.A.G 1715-
t  Measuring tool set -V.A.G 1594 A-
t  Current flow diagram
Test conditions
l  Fuse no. 43 o.k.
l  The coolant temperature must be at least 85°C.
l  All electrical components disconnected.
l  If vehicle is equipped with air conditioning, this must be switched off.
l  On vehicles with an automatic gearbox the selector lever must be in position “P” or “N”.
Check for proper operation
–  Connecting up the vehicle system tester -V.A.G 1552- and selecting the control unit for engine electronics → Chapter.
–  Select 08 for the function “read measured value block” and display group number 002 → Chapter.
   
Readout on display:
The drawn in air mass is displayed in the display field 4 (gram per second).
Specified value: 2.0 to 4.0 g/s
–  Press → key.
–  Enter 06 for the function “End output” and confirm the entry with key Q.
–  Switch off ignition.
If the nominal values are not reached or there is a fault relating to the air mass meter in the fault memory:
–  Test voltage supply of air mass meter -G70- → Chapter.

  WARNING
To avoid damaging the electronic components, switch on the relevant measuring range before connecting the measuring cables and comply with the test conditions.
–  Disconnect the 3-pin plug connection from the air mass meter.
  
Reading measured value block 2        ->

–  Connect hand multimeter e.g. -V.A.G 1526 A- between contact 3 of the plug and engine mass.
–  Start engine and run in idle.
Specified value: approx. battery voltage
–  Switch off ignition.
–  If the nominal value is not reached, test the wiring between contact 3 of the plug and fuse for open circuit or short-circuit to earth or positive. If necessary eliminate malfunctions → Current Flow Diagrams, Fault Finding Electrics, Fitting Locations.
–  If fuses and wiring are o.k. but neverthless the nominal value is not reached, test fuel pump relay -J17- → Anchor.
–  If the voltage supply is o.k., check signal lines → Anchor.
Check signal and earth line for air mass meter

–  Connect test box -V.A.G 1598/22 - at wiring loom to the engine control unit.

–  Test wiring from plug of air mass meter to engine control unit for open circuit or short-circuit to positive or earth, if necessary repair.

–  If the wiring is O.K., replace air mass meter -G70 -.
