Testing the compression
Testing the compression
Test conditions
l  Engine oil temperature at least 30°C
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Torque wrench 5...50 Nm (e.g. - V.A.G 1331 -)
t  Compression tester (e. g. -V.A.G 1381 - or -V.A.G 1763 -)
t  Adapter (e.g. -V.A.G 1381/12-)
t  Flexible-head wrench for glow plugs
Test sequence
–  Remove engine cover → Anchor.
–  Remove intake manifold: → 1.9 ltr./50 kW (SDI) Engine, Fuel Injection and Glow Plug System → Rep. Gr.23.
–  Disconnect the plug for fuel shut-off valve at the injection pump.
–  Disconnect the plug connection to the metering mechanism of the injection pump.
–  Remove all glow plugs using a flexible-head wrench.

–  Screw in adapter (e.g -V.A.G 1381/12 -) instead of the glow plugs.
–  Test compression with compression tester (e.g. -V.A.G 1381- and/or -V.A.G 1763-).
  WARNING
Ensure that no foreign bodies can get into the intake manifold.
  Note
Use of tester → Operating Instructions.
–  Operate starter until the tester no longer indicates a pressure rise.
Compression readings:
  S15-0105
New engine
Wear limit
Pressure difference between individual cylinders
2.5...3.1 MPa1.9 MPamax. 0.5 MPa

–  Screw in glow plugs with flexible-head wrench.
   Tightening torque: 15 Nm
–  Interrogate fault memory: → 1.9 ltr./50 kW (SDI) Engine, Fuel Injection and Glow Plug System → Rep. Gr.01.
  Note
Disconnecting the plug connection to the injection pump causes faults to be stored. After the measurement, interrogate the fault memory and delete it as required.
