Inspecting proper operation and power supply
Test conditions
l  Battery voltage at least 11.5 V.
l  Fuel pump fuse O.K. → Current flow diagrams and Fitting locations.
l  Fuel pump control unit -J538- O.K.
l  Fuel pressure sender for low pressure -G410-(if present) O.K.
Test sequence
  Note
The function of the fuel pump is tested with the actuator diagnosis.
–  Connect the Vehicle diagnosis, Measurement and Information system -VAS 5051B-.
–  Switch on the ignition.
–  On the display press consecutively the buttons for “Vehicle self-diagnosis”,“01 - Engine electronics” and “005 - Actuator diagnosis”.
–  On the display press the right arrow buttons up to the actuator diagnosis of the fuel pump electronics.
l  The fuel pump must now run slowly to the maximum speed.
  Note
The fuel pump runs very quietly.
–  Switch off the ignition.
The fuel pump does not run:
–  Removing rear seat bench → Body Work → Rep. Gr.72.

–  Disconnect plug -3- from fuel pump control unit -J538--1-.
  S20-0159
–  Testing the voltage supply with the voltage tester -V.A.G 1527B- between contact -1- and -6-.
l  The LED must light up.
LED does not light up:
–  Determine and remove open circuit in the wiring according to the current flow diagram → Current flow diagrams and Fitting locations.
The LED lights up (power supply O.K.):
–  Remove the fuel delivery unit → Chapter.
–  Check whether the electric wiring between the flange and fuel pump is connected.
If there is no open circuit in the wiring:
–  Fuel pump faulty, replace fuel delivery unit → Chapter.
