Removing and installing, tightening the timing belt
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Wrench for tensioning pullies (e.g. -Matra V 159-, -Hazet 2587- or - Stahlwille 127-17-
t  Torque wrench
Removing
–  Put lock carrier in service position → Body Work; Rep. Gr.50.
–  Removing the V-ribbed belt.
–  Removing tensioning element for V-ribbed belt.
–  Remove timing belt guard - top part.

–  Position camshaft sprocket to TDC marking of cylinder 1 by rotating at crankshaft. Marking on camshaft sprocket must be aligned with arrow at toothed belt guard.
–  Mark the rotation direction of the timing belt.
  A13-0077
–  Remove vibration damper/belt pulley.
  A13-0009
–  Remove -middle- and bottom part of timing belt guard.
–  Slacken tensioning pulley and take off timing belt.
–  Then turn crankshaft back slightly.
Install
Condition
l  The pistons must not be positioned at top dead centre.
Procedure
–  Fit timing belt onto the crankshaft sprocket and coolant pump (pay attention to direction of running).
Setting the timing
  Note
When rotating the camshaft, the crankshaft must not be positioned at TDC. Risk of damaging valves and piston crowns.
  A13-0010
–  Bring the marking on the camshaft sprocket in line with the marking on the timing belt guard.
–  Install the -middle- and bottom part of the timing belt guard.
–  Install vibration damper/toothed belt. Tightening torque: 25 Nm.
  V13-1271
–  Position crankshaft on TDC cylinder 1.
–  Fit timing belt onto tensioning pulley and camshaft sprocket.
Tightening the timing belt
Conditions
l  The engine must be not more than warm to touch.
l  Turn the tensioning roller on the eccentric using a nut wrench (e.g. Matra V159) five times in both directions up to the dead stop before tensioning the timing belt.
Procedure
  A13-0076
–  Tighten the timing belt. Do this by turning the nut wrench (e.g. Matra V159) on the eccentric to the left -direction of the arrow- up to the dead stop.
–  Then slacken the timing belt until the notch -1- and the pointer -2- are opposite each other (use a mirror).
–  Tighten fixing screws to 20 Nm.
–  Position engine on TDC cylinder 1.
–  Rotate crankshaft further two revolutions in direction of rotation of engine until engine is again positioned at TDC of cylinder 1. When doing this, it is important that the last 45° (1/8 rotation) are rotated without any interruption.
–  Once again inspect the tension of timing belt - specified value: Pointer and notch are positioned opposite to each other.
–  Install the top part of the timing belt guard.
–  Installing tensioning element for V-ribbed belt. Tightening torque: 25 Nm.
–  Install the V-ribbed belt → Chapter.
