Cybrid Steering Motor Pump - Brush Replacement Info.

SUBJECT:
CYBRID STEERING MOTOR PUMP BRUSH REPLACEMENT IN-VEHICLE PROCEDURE

When working with an XT6 Cybrid Steering System, should you encounter a Code 34 (faulty motor pump circuit open) in the cybrid steering control
unit, it is possible the motor pump brushes may be sticking or may need to be replaced. Refer to MSA5T9212A XT6 Motor Drive Power Steering
Service Manual Supplement for additional trouble shooting information. Follow the procedures below for inspection, cleaning and/or brush replacement.

1.

Disconnect the negative battery cable.

2.

Disconnect harness power and ground leads from the motor pump assembly. Use caution when removing retaining nuts to prevent damage to
internal wiring.

3.

Remove the access screw on the motor yoke (housing) to measure brush wear. Refer to 91MY XT Service Manual Section 4-3, Page 69, "Motor
Brush Inspection".

4.

Measure dimension "H" from yoke (housing) surface. If "H" is greater than 14 mm (0.551 in.) REPLACEMENT OF BRUSHES IS
RECOMMENDED. This part is available through normal parts channels by ordering P/N 31266GA340.

5.

Remove the motor pump mounting bolts. REMOVAL OF THE HIGH OR LOW PRESSURE LINES IS NOT NECESSARY.

6.

Rotate the motor to the right side of the engine compartment. Hold the motor in a vertical upright position. The pump reservoir should be facing
DOWN, to reduce the possibility of fluid contamination to the motor assembly.

7.

Remove the two bolts which secure the cover plate and gently remove cover. "CAUTION: DO NOT SEPARATE THE MOTOR HOUSING AND
ARMATURE FROM PUMP RESERVOIR OR DAMAGE TO RESERVOIR OIL SEAL MAY OCCUR."

8.

Using a brush and compressed air, clean the exposed area of the armature and commutator. A pencil eraser or 3M Scotchbrite Pad may be used to
clean the commutator for proper brush contact.

9.

If brush replacement is required: remove brushes from the motor cover by removing the two 7 mm retaining nuts and washers from the brush leads
and lifting the brush springs. "Always replace both brushes (positive and negative) as a unit. "Tighten torque: 3.9-5.1 N-m (0.40-0.52 kg-m,
2.9-3.8 ft.lb.).

10.

Install the motor cover while depressing the brushes and slowly guide the cover into place. Note: A small amount of vaseline or white grease may
