Crankshaft Main Bearing Seal: Service and Repair
REPLACEMENT OF OIL SEALS
NOTE: There are two methods of oil seal replacement, described as follows:
1. REPLACE FRONT OIL SEAL
If the oil pump is not installed to the cylinder block:
(a) Using a screwdriver, drive out the oil seal.
(b) Apply MP grease to a new oil seal.
(c) Using SST, drive in the oil seal until its surface is flush with the oil pump body surface. SST 09226-10010
If the oil pump is installed to the cylinder block:
(a) Using a knife, cut off the lip of the oil seal as shown in the figure.
(b) Using a screwdriver, pry out the oil seal.
NOTE: Tape the screwdriver to avoid damaging the crankshaft.
(c) Check the oil seal lip contact surface of the crankshaft for cracks or damage.
(d) Apply MP grease to a new oil seal.
(e) Using SST, drive in the oil seal until its surface is flush with the oil pump body surface. SST 09226-10010
2. REPLACE REAR OIL SEAL
If the rear oil seal retainer is not installed to the cylinder block:
