Evaporative Emission Control Canister: Testing and Inspection

    Inspect charcoal canister for cracks or damage, and replace canister if any are found. Also, keep canister away from open flames, as a used canister
contains gasoline vapors which are extremely flammable.

Remove charcoal canister from vehicle.

Using low pressure compressed air, blow into tank pipe and ensure air flows without resistance from other pipes. If air does not flow freely,
replace canister.

To clean canister filter, proceed as follows:

a. On except 3A-C, 3E, 4A-C and 4A-LC engines, apply 40-43 psi compressed air to tank port while blocking remaining ports on top of

canister.

b. On 3A-C, 3E, 4A-C and 4A-LC engines, apply 40---43 psi compressed air to outer vacuum control port while blocking remaining ports on

top of canister.

If air fails to flow through canister, or if charcoal is discharged from canister in either step 2 or 3, canister is defective.
