Wheel Bearing: Adjustments
Fig. 1 Measuring wheel bearing preload
1.
Raise and support front of vehicle, then remove wheel and tire assembly and brake caliper. Wire brake caliper aside without stretching brake hose.
2.
Remove hub grease cap, cotter pin and locknut, then loosen hub nut.
3.
Tighten hub nut to 22 ft. lbs. (300 kg-cm), then rotate hub and disc assembly several times to ensure bearings are seated.
4.
Loosen hub nut until it can be turned with fingers, then retighten nut finger tight.
5.
Using a suitable spring scale, measure frictional force of axle seal and make note of it, Fig. 1.
6.
Tighten hub nut slightly, then measure wheel bearing preload with spring scale. Preload should be as follows:
a. On Cressida, Starlet, Van w/2WD models, preload should be 12.8-30.4 ounces, in addition to axle seal frictional force measured in step 5.
b. On Celica, Corolla RWD & 1982-Early 1986 Supra models, preload should be 0-37 ounces, in addition to axle seal frictional force measured
in step 5.
c. On Pickup w/2WD, preload should be 21-64 ounces, in addition to axle seal frictional force measured in step 5.
7.
If preload is not as specified, tighten or loosen hub nut as necessary until proper preload is obtained.
8.
Install locknut, cotter pin, grease cap, caliper and wheel and tire assembly. If cotter pin holes do not line up, tighten nut by the least amount
possible until holes are aligned.
