Timing Belt: Service and Repair
Timing Belt Replace
Timing Belt Removal
1.
Disconnect battery ground cable.
2.
Drain coolant from radiator and engine block.
3.
Remove air cleaner assembly and radiator upper hose.
4.
Loosen drive belts, then remove fan fluid coupling and fan shroud.
5.
Remove drive belts and air intake hose.
6.
Set No. 1 piston to TDC of compression stroke.

Remove bolts and No. 3 timing belt cover. If timing belt is to be reused, draw an arrow to indicate direction of rotation and reference marks
between crankshaft sprocket and timing belt and camshaft sprockets and timing belt.
8.
Loosen idler pulley bolt, the using a suitable tool, shift idler pulley toward alternator. Finger tighten idler pulley bolt.
9.
Remove timing belt from camshaft sprockets.
10.
Using tool number 09278-54011 or equivalent, secure camshaft in place, then remove camshaft sprocket attaching bolts and sprockets from
camshafts. The exhaust side camshaft and intake side camshaft each use a different type of sprocket and are not interchangeable. During
installation of the sprockets, ensure to install the correct sprocket onto its camshaft.

Remove crankshaft pulley bolt and pulley.
12.
Remove air conditioner compressor bracket.
13.
Remove No. 1 timing belt cover and timing belt. Remove idler pulley bolt, pulley and tension spring.
14.
Remove crankshaft sprocket bolt and sprocket. Remove oil pump drive shaft sprocket bolt and sprocket.
Timing Belt Installation
1.
Check timing belt for damage, replace if necessary.
2.
Install oil pump drive shaft sprocket. Torque bolt to 16 ft. lbs.
