Measure brake shoe lining thickness, Fig. 7. Minimum thickness should be .04 inch.

3.

Inspect brake lining and drum for proper contact and replace drum or shoes as necessary.

4.

Inspect wheel cylinder for corrosion or damage.

5.

Inspect backing plate for wear or damage.

6.

Inspect bellcrank components for bending, wear or damage.

7.

Apply a suitable lubricant to backing plate contact areas.

Installation

1.

Assemble parking brake cable to parking brake lever, Fig. 10.

2.

Position rear brake in place with end of shoe inserted in piston rod, then install shoe hold-down spring and pin, using a suitable brake tool.

3.

Install strut with spring rearward, then position front brake in place with end of shoe inserted in piston rod and strut in place. Install shoe
hold-down spring and pin, using suitable tool.

4.

Install tension springs.

5.

Apply a suitable lubricant to adjuster, then install adjuster by opening shoes with screwdriver and inserting adjuster between pads.

6.

Install shoe guide plate, cable guide and adjusting cable, then the front return spring and rear return spring, using a suitable tool.

7.

Install tension spring to rear shoe, then hook adjusting lever with cable and insert lever. Retain adjusting lever with tension spring.

8.

Pull adjusting lever cable rearward, then release and ensure adjusting bolt rotates. If bolt does not rotate, check for improper installation of rear
brakes.

9.

Adjust strut to shortest possible length, then install drum.

10.

Rotate brake drum in reverse direction and depress brake pedal. Repeat process several times.

Remove drum, then check for proper clearance, Fig. 9. Clearance should be .024 inch. If clearance is not as specified, check parking brake system.
