Brake Pads > < Brake Shoes - Drum Brake, Check for Wear

Brake Shoes of Rear Wheel Brake, Remove and Install

  Remove

1.   Detach rear wheel
2.   Remove brake drum
3.   Unhook upper withdrawing spring (4) with brake spring pliers
4.   Remove retaining clamp (2)
5.   Unhook adjusting lever (3) with spring (1)
6.   Remove adjusting unit (5) with thermoclip
•   Pull brake shoes apart slightly
7.   Twist cups of compression springs (6) on both sides with KM-346 (7) until the springs are unlocked
8.   Remove front brake shoe (8) and unhook spring (9)
9.   Unhook rear brake shoe (10) from parking brake cable (11) and remove

  Install

10.   Clean brake anchor plate and coat both sides with anti-squeak compound on both sides of the mating surfaces of the brake shoes in the area of the arrows
11.   Clean brake drum
12.   Check wheel brake cylinder for leaks, replace if necessary LUREF_1.gif
13.   Check springs and fastenings for damage, replace if necessary
14.   Check brake shoes for cracks, oiling and wear, replace brake shoes if necessary
15.   Check brake drums for cracks and the mating surface of the brake shoes for grooves - if necessary: precision turn brake drum or replace brake drum

16.   Insert rear brake shoe in parking brake cable
Note:   Before installing brake shoes, ensure that the parking brake cable (1) is in the guide (2) on the brake anchor plate.
17.   Fit retaining pin, compression spring and plate with KM-346
18.   Hook in retaining spring (4) and place front brake shoe on guide (3)
19.   Fit retaining pin, compression spring and plate for front brake shoe
20.   Insert adjusting unit
•   Concertina star wheel (6)
•   Coat thread with silicone grease
Note:   Star wheel must not stick at the end of the adjustment unit
•   Insert adjustment unit with thermoclip - ensure correct installation position (arrow)
21.   Ensure that the spring washer (5) has been fitted before fitting the adjusting lever.
Note:   Fit new spring washer when installing new brake shoes.

22.   Fit adjusting lever (1) with spring (3)
23.   Insert holding clamp (4) and fit upper withdrawing spring (2) with brake spring pliers
24.   Install brake drum
25.   Fit rear wheel 110 Nm
26.   Adjust drum brake and parking brake LUREF_1.gif LUREF_1.gif
