The following test steps may or may not be helpful, they are only a proposal.

Diagnostic Trouble Codes

  • Read and record diagnostic trouble codes including status
  • Check for trouble codes with status INTERMITTENT or NOT PRESENT. If a trouble code is stored this may indicate the circuit which has the intermittent condition.
  • Move the related connectors, wiring harness and components in order to find the failure. Switch on all electric consumers by turns, because this can cause an electromagnetic interference in a circuit. Use the TECH 31/32 or an oscilloscope to observe the wiring harness for disturbances. Operate the system under different conditions over a considerable time.

  • Select the following Functional System on the diagnostic tester:
    Electronic Diesel Injection System EDC 16C9, Z 17 DTL, Z 17 DTH
  • Perform the following evaluation:

  • The following control units can impair the system function:
    ABS/TC/ESP (Vehicle Dynamic System)
    Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning System
    ECC/SAC (Electronic Climate Control)
    The checking of the corresponding Data List / Actuator Tests may or may not be helpful.
  • After successful test/fault repair proceed to the next test step
