C-002 - Engine Start Signal Circuit

Test

Work Order Description

Nominal Value

T001

Check: Component

  • Connect loaded battery parallel to the battery in the vehicle
  • Start engine

Does the engine start?

Yes: No:
T002

Check: Wiring Harness

  • Ignition OFF
  • Remove ignition key from ignition lock
  • All consumers turned off
  • Charge or replace battery
  • Check stall current

Note:

All car systems must be switched OFF during these tests. Doors and trunk / tailgate must be closed, engine compartment lighting must be disconnected.

Check: Battery Voltage

  • Connect wiring harness connector to:
    G1 Battery
    Terminal 31
  • Engine running
  • Turn all electrical consumers ON
  • Increase engine speed to 3000 rpm
  • Measure voltage between the following terminals:
    G1 Battery
    Wiring harness connector (wiring harness side) terminal 30
    &
    G1 Battery
    Wiring harness connector (wiring harness side) terminal 31

greater than 12.5 V

Check: Charging Indicator Lamp Circuit

  • Ignition OFF
  • Disconnect wiring harness connector from:
    G8 Alternator
    (Wiring Harness Connector D+ )
  • Ignition ON
  • Measure voltage between the following terminals:
    G8 Alternator
    Wiring harness connector (wiring harness side) terminal D+
    &
    Ground

greater than 11 V

Check: Interruption of Voltage Supply Circuit

  • Ignition OFF
  • Remove electrical component from socket:
    K1_X125 Relay - Starter
  • Measure voltage between the following terminals:
    K1_X125 Relay - Starter
    Socket Terminal 30
    &
    Ground

greater than 11 V

Check: Interruption of Voltage Supply Circuit

  • No gear is engaged
  • Connect fused jumper wire for a maximum of 3 s to:
    K1_X125 Relay - Starter
    Socket Terminal 30
    &
    K1_X125 Relay - Starter
    Socket Terminal 87

Does the engine start?

Yes: No:
T007

Check: Interruption of Signal Circuit

  • Ignition ON
  • Measure voltage between the following terminals:
    K1_X125 Relay - Starter
    Socket Terminal 86
    &
    Ground

greater than 11 V

Check: Short to Voltage of Signal Circuit

  • Ignition OFF
  • Remove electrical component from socket:
    X125 Underhood Electronic Module
  • Disconnect wiring harness connector from:
    A84 Control Unit - Engine
  • Ignition ON
  • Measure voltage between the following terminals:
    X125 Underhood Electronic Module
    Wiring harness connector (wiring harness side) terminal 1 (XE3)
    &
    Ground

less than 0.3 V

  • Ignition OFF
  • Measure resistance between the following terminals:
    X125 Underhood Electronic Module

  • Measure resistance between the following terminals:

    Wiring harness connector (wiring harness side) terminal 60 (XC100)

less than 5 Ohm

Check: Interruption of Voltage Supply Circuit

  • Measure resistance between the following terminals:
    K1_X125 Relay - Starter
    Socket Terminal 87
    &
    M15 Starter
    Wiring harness connector (wiring harness side) terminal 50

    Wiring harness connector (wiring harness side) terminal 30
    or
    G8 Alternator
    Wiring harness connector (wiring harness side) terminal B-
    &
    Ground

or

  • Defective component:
    G8 Alternator
E003 Result: Short to Ground/Interruption
  • Short circuit to ground/interruption of circuit between:
    G8 Alternator
    Wiring harness connector (wiring harness side) terminal D+
    &
    A84 Control Unit - Engine
    Wiring harness connector (wiring harness side) terminal 52 (XC100)

or

  • Defective component:
    A84 Control Unit - Engine

Important:

Reset the concerned control unit with the diagnostic tester before replacing it. In order to do that, call up the "RESET" function from the PROGRAMMING menu of the current system on the diagnostic tester.

E004 Result: Defective Component
  • Stall current of one or more consumers is too high

Note:

During fault searching in the wiring harness, the sections of the wiring harness can be separated at the assigned connectors. When the stall current changes to the permissible value after separating a section, the fault is located in the concerning section of the wiring harness.

E005 Result: Defective Component
  • Defective component:
    A84 Control Unit - Engine

Important:

Reset the concerned control unit with the diagnostic tester before replacing it. In order to do that, call up the "RESET" function from the PROGRAMMING menu of the current system on the diagnostic tester.

E006 Result: Defective Component
  • Defective component:
    K1_X125 Relay - Starter
    or
    X125 Underhood Electronic Module

Important:

Reset the concerned control unit with the diagnostic tester before replacing it. In order to do that, call up the "RESET" function from the PROGRAMMING menu of the current system on the diagnostic tester.

Note:

The replacement of the components must be done in the listed order.

The system must be checked for proper operation after every replacement.

E007 Result: Interruption
  • Circuit interruption between:
    X125 Underhood Electronic Module
    Wiring harness connector (wiring harness side) terminal 1 (XE3)
    &
    A84 Control Unit - Engine
    Wiring harness connector (wiring harness side) terminal 60 (XC100)
E008 Result: Short to Ground
  • Short circuit to ground between:
    X125 Underhood Electronic Module
    Wiring harness connector (wiring harness side) terminal 1 (XE3)
    &
    A84 Control Unit - Engine
    Wiring harness connector (wiring harness side) terminal 60 (XC100)
E009 Result: Short to Voltage
  • Short circuit to voltage between:
    X125 Underhood Electronic Module
    Socket Terminal 1 (XE3)
    &
    A84 Control Unit - Engine
    Wiring harness connector (wiring harness side) terminal 60 (XC100)
E010 Result: Defective Component
  • Defective component:
    X125 Underhood Electronic Module

Important:

Reset the concerned control unit with the diagnostic tester before replacing it. In order to do that, call up the "RESET" function from the PROGRAMMING menu of the current system on the diagnostic tester.

E011 Result: High Transition Resistance
  • High transition resistance between:
    M15 Starter
    Wiring harness connector (component side) terminal 30
    &
    G1 Battery
    Wiring harness connector (component side) terminal 30
    or
    M15 Starter
    Wiring harness connector (component side) terminal 31
    &
    Ground

or

  • Defective component:
    M15 Starter
E012 Result: Interruption
  • Circuit interruption between:
    X125 Underhood Electronic Module
    Socket Terminal 4 (XE3)
    &
    M15 Starter
    Wiring harness connector (wiring harness side) terminal 50

or

    X125 Underhood Electronic Module

Important:

Reset the concerned control unit with the diagnostic tester before replacing it. In order to do that, call up the "RESET" function from the PROGRAMMING menu of the current system on the diagnostic tester.

E013 Result: Interruption
  • Circuit interruption between:
    G1 Battery
    Wiring harness connector (wiring harness side) terminal 30
    &
    FE18 Fuse
    Input contact

    X125 Underhood Electronic Module
