Water Pump Replacement (2.0L Diesel LBQ, LBR, LBS and LBX)

Removal Procedure

Warning: With a pressurized cooling system, the coolant temperature in the radiator can be considerably higher than the boiling point of the solution at atmospheric pressure. Removal of the surge tank cap, while the cooling system is hot and under high pressure, causes the solution to boil instantaneously with explosive force. This will cause the solution to spew out over the engine, the fenders, and the person removing the cap. Serious bodily injury may result.
1. Open the hood.
2. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .
3. Remove the timing belt. Refer to Timing Belt Replacement .

Note:
•  Ensure that the engine block surface and water pump surface are clear of old gasket material.
•  Do not immerse the water pump in solvent. The solvent may enter the water pump's permanently lubricated bearings and cause premature bearing failure.
•  The water pump drive pulley and impeller should turn straight and smoothly. If the drive pulley wobbles, is noisy, or feels rough when rotating, replace the water pump.

1. Inspect the water pump.
2. Install a New water pump gasket (1).
3. Install the water pump (2).

Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution .

4. Install the water pump bolts (3) and tighten to 25 N·m(19 lb ft) .
5. Filling the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .
6. Install the timing belt. Refer to Timing Belt Replacement .
7. Close the hood.
