DRIVING WITH ABS, MAINTENANCE

Driving with ABS

When the ignition is switched on, the "ABS" symbol illuminates in the instrument housing and is extinguished after 4 seconds.

If the ABS telltale is not extinguished, or it is illuminated occasionally or continually during travel, there is a fault in the ABS. This fault should be located using Diagnostic Plug KM-640 in position "K", or using TECH 1 and Program Module "OPEL 89-90 ECU", and then eliminated.

At approx. 5.75 km/h (3.5 mph) and at approx. 15 km/h (9.25 mph), the ABS carries out a self-test (Bite), which can also be detected from return pump noises. A further self-test is carried out at approx. 20 km/h (12.5 mph) and in each additional starting operation, and in the case of a fault, the ABS telltale is illuminated.

With full brake application where the ABS is activated, the vehicle is free from locking almost up to a standstill (£ 4 km/h (2.5 mph)), and steerability and manoeuverability are guaranteed.

Braking in the ABS control range is indicated to the driver by a pulsing in the brake pedal together with return pump noise, and warns the driver that he should suit his diving speed to the present driving conditions.

If the ABS develops a defect, the ABS telltale illuminates, but the conventional brake system remains fully operational.

The vehicle should then be checked and repaired in an Authorized Opel Workshop.

Maintenance

The Opel ABS-2E is maintenance-free and is not subject to the Opel Inspection System.

Before carrying out operations on vehicles with ABS, observe the following:

-    When welding operations are carried out, control units must be removed.

-    At temperatures above +80 °C/ +176 °F (drying oven), control units must be removed.

-    After operations on the brake system, it should be bled and a pressure check carried out.

-    All connections should be checked for leaks.

-    Do not use the quick-charger for starting.

-    Ensure that all connections in the wiring harness are correctly seated.

-    Wiring harness multiple plug should never be disconnected from or connected to the electronic control unit when the ignition is on.
