Camber

Camber is the angle between a wheel's centre plane (1) and a vertical line (2) to the plane of the road.

It is a positive camber (I) if the wheel centre plane tilts outwards from the vertical line. It is a negative camber (II) if it tilts inwards towards the vertical line.

To achieve high lateral forces and hence better handling when cornering, modern vehicles are usually designed with a negative camber.

Effects of incorrect measurement angles

Camber too large (negative):

  • improved lateral control on cornering,
  • at high speed and high axle load, unacceptable heating of tyre shoulders
  • tyre damage due to overheating
  • premature inner tyre wear

Camber too low (positive):

  • poorer lateral control on cornering
  • increased outer tyre wear (only in conjunction with toe-in fault)
