Check engine for leaks (amount of CO in coolant) (Z 14 XE, Z 16 YNG)

  • Conditions: engine at operating temperature (oil temperature >= 80°C)

1. Open bonnet

2. Check coolant level

  • Correct coolant level if necessary

3. Unscrew cover of coolant compensation tank

  • Caution: Cooling system is under pressure.
  • Release pressure carefully

4. Attach test instrument

6. Check engine for leaks

  • By actuating rubber bellows, air is sucked from coolant compensation tank. Coolant must not be sucked out. If blue fluid in upper chamber of test apparatus turns yellow, cylinder head gasket or cylinder head is leaking.
  • Operation: In the clear cylinder of the tester there is a blue reactive fluid that turns yellow when air is suctioned containing the smallest amount of carbon monoxide. When fresh air is suctioned, the test fluid is regenerated, i.e. turns back to blue.
  • The fluid can be checked by exposing it to exhaust emissions from the exhaust pipe. The test fluid should then turn yellow.

7. Detach test instrument

  • Caution: Cooling system is under pressure.
  • Release pressure carefully

8. Close coolant compensating tank

9. Close bonnet.
