Replace intake manifold gasket (Z 12 XE, Z 12 XEP, Z 14 XEP, with air conditioning, LHD) > < Replace front crankshaft seal ring (Z 12 XE, Z 12 XEP, Z 14 XEP, with air conditioning, LHD)

Replace exhaust manifold gasket (Z 12 XE, Z 14 XEP, with air conditioning, LHD)

Note:   On vehicles as of model year 04 with ESP - the steering angle sensor loses its basic adjustment each time the battery is disconnected. It must be recalibrated.

  Remove

1.   Open bonnet
2.   Disconnect battery
•   Detach ground cable
3.   Raise vehicle
4.   Remove front exhaust pipe
Note:   When removing the centre muffler, a catalytic converter, an exhaust manifold, or an exhaust manifold with catalytic converter, secure the portion of the exhaust system remaining on the vehicle to prevent uncontrolled sagging
•   For this purpose, the exhaust system portion including the flexpipe may be fastened to the vehicle underbody using suitable means, such as wire
Note:   Angular dislocations of the flexpipe as small as 5 to 10 degrees offset from the intended installation position can cause damage and subsequent complete failure of the flexpipe.
•   Unscrew 3 nuts
5.   Remove ribbed V-belt cover
•   Unscrew 3 bolts (1)
•   Remove clip (arrow)

6.   Remove ribbed V-belt
•   Tension ribbed V-belt tensioner in direction of arrow with KM-6131 (2)
•   Use KM-6130 (1)
•   Remove from compressor ribbed V-belt pulley
7.   Loosen compressor
Note:   The air conditioning system remains closed
•   Unscrew 2 bolts

8.   Lower vehicle
9.   Detach intake pipe (1)
•   Remove bolt (2)
•   Pull suction pipe from bracket

10.   Remove heated oxygen sensor for mixture regulation
•   Disconnect wiring harness connector.
•   Unclip cable from bracket
•   Carefully unscrew using KM-6129 (1)

11.   Remove oil dipstick guide tube
•   Remove bolt (arrow)
12.   Remove exhaust manifold heat shield
•   Unscrew 2 bolts

13.   Remove compressor
•   Disconnect wiring harness connector.
•   Unscrew upper bolt
•   Suspend compressor
14.   Remove exhaust manifold
•   Unscrew 9 nuts
•   Remove exhaust manifold from below
•   Remove gasket.

  Install

15.   Clean sealing surfaces
•   Cylinder head, exhaust manifold
16.   Install exhaust manifold
•   Replace gasket
•   Replace nuts
•   Tighten 9 nuts 15 Nm (wait for 30 sec. and then 15 Nm again)
17.   Fit compressor
•   Release compressor
•   Screw in upper bolt
18.   Attach exhaust manifold heat shield
•   Tighten 2 bolts 8 Nm

19.   Install oil dipstick guide tube
•   Replace 2x seal ring
•   Tighten bolt 8 Nm
20.   Install oxygen sensor, mixture regulation, heated
•   Apply assembly paste to threads
•   Tighten oxygen sensor with KM-6129 40 Nm
•   Connect wiring harness plug
•   Clip in cable
21.   Raise vehicle
22.   Fasten compressor
•   Tighten 2 lower bolts 20 Nm
23.   Install ribbed V-belt
Note:   Observe running direction and installation position
•   Relax ribbed V-belt tensioner with KM-6130
24.   Install ribbed V-belt cover
•   Tighten 3 bolts
•   Install clip
25.   Attach front exhaust pipe
•   Replace gasket
•   Replace nuts
•   Tighten 3 nuts 25 Nm
26.   Lower vehicle
27.   Fasten compressor
•   Tighten upper bolt
•   Connect wiring harness plug
28.   Attach intake pipe
•   Tighten bolt
29.   Connect battery
30.   Program volatile memory
31.   In vehicles with ESP: calibrate steering angle sensor
•   Switch on ignition
•   Rotate the steering wheel one time from its right-hand to its left-hand stop
32.   Close bonnet
