Complaint: In some cases it might be possible that the oil pump drive gear nut detaches during engine operation, causing the timing belt to jump over. Complete engine damages are extremely rare.
Cause: Inadmissible offset of oil pump sprocket during assembly in engine plant.
Production: Implementation of an addition monitoring operation at assembly plant. A 100% check will be carried out regarding: - Checking the offset between the pump sprocket and the timing belt. - The gap between the shafts end and the nut outer surface. Furthermore the tightening torque for the oil pump drive gear has been increased to 60 Nm as of the following engine number: 11806070 (December 2004).

Remedy:

In case of concern please repair according to engine damage. Please
note that the tightening torque for the oil pump drive gear has been
increased to 60 Nm.

Tightening procedure: Tighten the oil pump drive gear nut by 60 Nm and
wait 60 seconds (30 seconds is a minimum requirment). Loose the drive
gear nut. Retighten the drive gear nut by 60 Nm again.

For claiming costs please contact the Technical Assistance Centre
