Seat belt load limiter

The Corsa-B and Vectra-B passenger safety systems have been further improved by means of the seat belt load limiter.

The installation of the seat belt load limiter must comply with national legislation. The Corsa-B and Vectra-B are equipped with seat belt load limiters in Australia; the Vectra-B is equipped with seat belt load limiters in Japan.

The seat belt load limiter is integrated into the seat belt reel retractor. In the event of a vehicle accident, seat belt pressure against the ribcage is thereby reduced.

Function

When the seat belt is locked, the force profile runs from the belt fabric (1) through the shaft (2), toothed segment (6), profile washer (4) and to the housing (5). The force is transmitted via two pins and a torque rod (3) between shaft and profile washer.

If the force applied to the belt fabric exceeds a certain maximum level, the pins shear off and the force is transmitted via the torque rod alone. If the applied force further increases, the torque rod bends. When the torque rod bends, the shaft turns as a result, causing the belt to give. The belt gives for as long as the torque rod bends.

• Service

To ensure optimal functioning of the seat belt load limiter, replace the reel retractors after every vehicle accident during which the seat belt tensioner was triggered. The yellow shackles on the seat belt locks indicate that the tensioner has been triggered.
