Special tools, testers and auxiliary items

• ◆ Spark plug key 3122B.
• ◆ Puller 3074A.
• ◆ Assembly tool 2036.
• ◆ Pressure hose VW 653/3.
• ◆ Lever VW 541/1A with press piece VW 541/5.
• ◆ Fitting tool 10-204.

Removing

• ‒ Remove camshaft .
• ‒ Remove bucket tappets (do not interchange) and store with the contact surface downwards.
• ‒ Remove spark plugs.
• ‒ Set piston of appropriate cylinder to "bottom dead centre".

• ‒ → Fit assembly tool 2036 and adjust mountings to height of studs.
• ‒ Screw compressed air hose VW 653/3 into spark plug thread and apply a continuous pressure of 6 bar minimum.
• ‒ Remove valve springs with lever VW 541/1A and press piece VW 541/5.
• ‒ Pull off valve stem seals with 3047 A.

Note:

Tight cotters can be loosened by tapping lightly on the lever.

Installing

• ‒ → To prevent damage to the new valve stem seals, place plastic sleeve -A- on valve shaft.
• ‒ Oil valve stem seal -B-, place it in the hool 10-204 and push carefully onto the valve guide.
