Vacuum unit leak test

Retard unit

U28-0004
  • ‒ → Connect up vacuum tester between intake manifold and retard vacuum unit. Switch vacuum tester throughput.
  • ‒ Start engine and let it idle.
  • ‒ Pull off vacuum hose of vacuum advance unit.
  • ‒ Switch vacuum tester such that vacuum is held on vacuum unit end. The vacuum indicated may drop off by max. 10% in one minute; otherwise vacuum unit is to be renewed.

Advance unit

  • ‒ Connect up vacuum tester between carburettor and vacuum advance unit. Set vacuum tester to throughput.
  • ‒ Pull off vacuum hose of vacuum retard unit and seal on intake manifold end.
  • ‒ Select engine speed such that vacuum indicated on vacuum tester higher than test value at advance end.

Note:

If no vacuum is indicated on the vacuum tester, the vacuum tap in the carburettor is clogged.

  • ‒ Set vacuum tester such that vacuum is held on vacuum unit end. The vacuum displayed may drop off by max. 10% in one minute. Otherwise vacuum unit is it be renewed.

Checking vacuum advance

Specifications: distributor data =>page 28-13 .

  • ● Ignition off.

V25-1522
  • ‒ → Connect up ignition tester V.A.G 1367 with clip-on trigger V.A.G 1367/8 or ignition tester V.A.G 1767.
  • ‒ Connect up vacuum tester V.A.G 1367 between carburettor and vacuum advance unit. Set tester to throughflow.
  • ‒ Pull vacuum hose off vacuum retard unit.
  • ‒ Start engine.
  • ‒ Increase engine speed if necessary to idling speed.

Checking with TDC sender

  • ‒ Note down advance angle indicated as basic value.

Checking with stroboscopic lamp

  • ‒ "Bring back notch" to ignition timing point mark and note down advance angle indicated as basic value.

Continuation for both test

  • ‒ Increase engine speed until vacuum indicated on tester is higher than test value at advance end.
  • ‒ Set vacuum tester such that pressure is held on vacuum unit end. Hold engine speed at idle.
  • ‒ Reduce vacuum on vacuum tester to test value -end of advance/start of advance-.
  • ‒ Establish advance angle (when testing with stroboscopic lamp " bring back notch").
  • ‒ Calculate vacuum advance:

Vacuum advance angle

  • ‒ Compare vacuum advance angle to specified value.

Checking vacuum retard

Specifications: distributor data =>page 28-13

  • ● Ignition off.

V25-1522
  • ‒ → Connect up ignition tester V.A.G 1367 with clip-on trigger V.A.G 1367/8 or ignition tester V.A.G 1767.
  • ‒ Start engine and let it idle.
  • ‒ Check and if necessary correct ignition timing point =>page 28-23 .
  • ‒ Pull both vacuum hoses off vacuum unit.
  • ‒ Increase engine speed if necessary to idling speed.

Checking with TDC sender

  • ‒ Compare advance angle to specified value for end of retard.

Checking with stroboscopic lamp

  • ‒ "Bring back notch" and compare angle indicated to specified value for and of retard.
