4 cyl. carburetor engine, mechanics (1.5, 1.6 and 1.8 litre engine)
Removing and installing parts of cooling system
Installing service cardboard air deflectors

(with the exception of Scirocco)

Note:

The front perforated part is only needed for the Jetta. It should be broken off in the case of a Golf.

  • ◆ Radiator removed.
  • ‒ Insert narrow service deflector - 161 121 283 C - on left into appropriate slots in the radiator grille and cross member.
 
U19-0004
  • ‒ → Vertically align deflector and mark hole in the lock carrier plate.
  • ‒ Drill dia. 4.0 mm hole in cross member.
         a = 20 mm
  • ‒ Insert broad service deflector - 161 121 284 C - on right into hole and slots at the radiator grille.
  • ‒ Vertically align deflector and mark hole in the lock carrier plate.
  • ‒ Drill dia. 5.0 mm holes in lock carrier plate.
  • ‒ Attach deflectors to lock carrier plate with snap-on nuts B4.2x16 (N 015 448 1) and ovalhead machine screws B4.2x13 (N 013 966 12).
  • ‒ Fit radiator at bottom and align deflectors such that ends make contact with radiator plenum chambers.

Note:

Wires to thermo-switch for fan must not be jammed in; if necessary, cut out deflector somewhat or re-route wiring.

  • ‒ Tighten wing nuts of service deflectors and secure radiator.
