Golf Mk1

4 Cyl injection engine (2 valve), Mechanics
Servicing valve gear
Renewing valve stem oil seal -with cylinder head installed

(with cylinder head installed)

  • ‒ Remove camshaft and tappets.
  • ‒ Remove spark plugs.
  • ‒ Position piston of cylinder being worked on to BDC.
 
V15-0609
  • ‒ → Install fitting tool 2036 and adjust to height of studs
  • ‒ Screw compressed air hose VW 653/3 into spark plug hole and aply a continuous pressure of.
         at least 6 bar.
  • ‒ Remove valve springs with lever VW 541/1.

Note:

Seized valve cotters can be loosened by tapping lightly on lever of VW 541/1.

  • ‒ Remove valve stem seals with 3047A.

  • ‒ → Install valve stem seals: Place plastic sleeve -A- on valve stem seal -B- place in tool and press carefully onto valve guide.
Important!
  • ◆ To avoid damage, always use plastic sleeve to install valve stem seals.
  • ◆ After installation of new hydraulic tappets, engine should not be started for approx. 30 minutes (valve-piston contact).
