Checking and adjustment conditions
-
● Engine oil temperature min. 60 °C.
On engines with DIS:
-
‒ →
Pull plug off DIS switch unit and joined together.
A - Checking centrifugal advance with TDC sender
(Specifications =>page 28-35
, distributor data)
-
‒ With ignition switched off connect ignition timing and tester (e.g. V.A.G 1367).
-
‒ If necessary use aux. terminal for connecting to terminal 1 on the oil.
-
‒ Pull vacuum hose off the advance vacuum unit on the distributor and seal.
On engine code letters EG
-
‒ Pull vacuum hose off the retard vacuum unit and seal.
-
‒ Start engine and run at idling speed (max. 1000 rpm).
-
‒ Note indicated advance angle = basic angle.
-
‒ Slowly increase engine speed.
- Commencement of advance is indicated by the higher number of degrees.
-
‒ Compare engine speed with test figure for start of advance.
-
‒ Increase engine speed to next test speed.
-
‒ Read off advance angle on the tester.
-
‒ Calculate centrifugal advance angle:

B - Checking centrifugal advance with stroboscope
(Specifications =>page 28-35
, distributor data)
-
‒ Connect engine speed tester and stroboscope.
-
‒ Pull vacuum hose of the advance vacuum unit and seal.
On engine code letters EG
-
‒ Pull vacuum hose of the retard vacuum unit and seal.
-
‒ Start engine and run at idling speed (max. 1000 rpm).
-
‒ Check and if necessary adjust ignition timing.
-
‒ "Brink mark back" to centre of TDC marking.
-
‒ Note indicated angle = basic angle.
-
‒ Slow increase engine speed .
- Commencement of advance is indicated by the notch moving away.
-
‒ Compare speed with test figure start of advance.
-
‒ Increase the engine speed to the nest test speed.
"Bring the mark back" to the centre of ignition timing mark and real off advance angle.
