Checking ignition timing control

V28-0263

Checking and adjustment conditions

  • ● Engine oil temperature min. 60 °C.

On engines with DIS:

  • ‒ → Pull plug off DIS switch unit and joined together.

A - Checking centrifugal advance with TDC sender

(Specifications =>page 28-35 , distributor data)

  • ‒ With ignition switched off connect ignition timing and tester (e.g. V.A.G 1367).
  • ‒ If necessary use aux. terminal for connecting to terminal 1 on the oil.
  • ‒ Pull vacuum hose off the advance vacuum unit on the distributor and seal.

On engine code letters EG

  • ‒ Pull vacuum hose off the retard vacuum unit and seal.
  • ‒ Start engine and run at idling speed (max. 1000 rpm).
  • ‒ Note indicated advance angle = basic angle.
  • ‒ Slowly increase engine speed.
  • Commencement of advance is indicated by the higher number of degrees.
  • ‒ Compare engine speed with test figure for start of advance.
  • ‒ Increase engine speed to next test speed.
  • ‒ Read off advance angle on the tester.
  • ‒ Calculate centrifugal advance angle:

Indicated advanced angle

-

Basic angle noted

=

Centrifugal advance angle

  • ‒ Repeat check at other test speeds.

B - Checking centrifugal advance with stroboscope

(Specifications =>page 28-35 , distributor data)

  • ‒ Connect engine speed tester and stroboscope.
  • ‒ Pull vacuum hose of the advance vacuum unit and seal.

On engine code letters EG

  • ‒ Pull vacuum hose of the retard vacuum unit and seal.
  • ‒ Start engine and run at idling speed (max. 1000 rpm).
  • ‒ Check and if necessary adjust ignition timing.
  • ‒ "Brink mark back" to centre of TDC marking.
  • ‒ Note indicated angle = basic angle.
  • ‒ Slow increase engine speed .
  • Commencement of advance is indicated by the notch moving away.
  • ‒ Compare speed with test figure start of advance.
  • ‒ Increase the engine speed to the nest test speed.
"Bring the mark back" to the centre of ignition timing mark and real off advance angle.
  • ‒ Calculate advance angle:

  • ‒ Repeat check at other test speeds.

C - Checking vacuum unit for leaks

Advance unit

V28-0396
  • ‒ → Connect vacuum tester and vacuum pump to vacuum -advanc- unit.
  • ‒ Switch tester to throughflow.
  • ‒ Using the pump, produce a vacuum of approx. 500 mbar.
  • ‒ Switch tester so that vacuum is held on the vacuum unit side.
  • ‒ Set vacuum on tester to 450 mbar.
  • The vacuum must not drop more than 10% within 1 minute. Otherwise the vacuum unit or the hose is leaking.

Retard unit

Engine code: EG

  • ‒ Connect vacuum tester and vacuum pump to vacuum - retard- unit.
  • ‒ Switch tester to throughflow.
  • ‒ Using the pump, produce a vacuum of approx 500 mbar.
  • ‒ Switch tester so that vacuum is held on the vacuum unit side.
  • ‒ Set vacuum on the to 450 mbar.
  • The vacuum must not drop more than 10% within 1 minute Otherwise the vacuum unit or the hose is leaking.

D - Checking Vacuum timing control - advance -

(Specifications =>page 28-35 , distributor data)

  • ‒ Connect engine speed and ignition tester or stroboscope.

V28-0396
  • ‒ → Connect vacuum tester and vacuum pump to - advance - vacuum unit.

On engine code: EG

  • ‒ Seal off the - retard - vacuum unit hose.
  • ‒ Switch tester to throughflow.
  • ‒ Start engine and run at idling speed.

Checking with TDC sender.

  • ‒ Note displayed advance angle = basic angle.

Checking with stroboscope:

  • ‒ "Bring mark"to centre of TDC mark.
  • ‒ Note indicated advance angle = basic angle.
  • ‒ Produce a vacuum with the pump until the timing mark start to move away.
  • ‒ Read off vacuum further until and compare with figure for start or advance.
  • ‒ Increase vacuum further until figure given for end of advance is reached.

Checking with TDC sender:

  • ‒ Read off advance angle and calculate vacuum angle.

=

Centrifugal advance angle

Checking with stroboscope:

  • ‒ "Bring mark"to centre of TDC mark.

Centrifugal advance angle

  • ‒ Increase the vacuum still further. The ignition timing mark must not move away.

E - Checking retard- vacuum control (engine code: EG)

(Specifications =>page 28-35 , distributor data)

  • ‒ Connect engine speed and ignition timing tester or stroboscope.
  • ‒ Start engine and run at idling speed.
  • ‒ Check and necessary adjust ignition timing.
  • ‒ Pull both vacuum hoses off the vacuum unit and seal the vacuum hose.
  • ‒ Adjust engine speed to approx. 950rpm.

Checking with stroboscope:

  • ‒ "Bring moth back" to ignition timing mark.
  • ‒ Compare figure with the specified figure for end of retard.
