From April 1984 power assisted steering will be available on Golf Convertible and Scirocco vehicles as an optional extra under the number M 657. This power assisted steering can also, under certain conditions, be service installed in older vehicles .

Until further notice, no repairs are to be carried out on the power assisted steering and the vane type pump. When defects occur, the causes are to be determined by employing a pressure test, leak test and the fault finding programme.

If defects are present in component parts, the complete power assisted steering system or the vane type pump is to be renewed.

Check pump delivery pressure

Note:

The sealing surfaces on the connections of the V.A.G 1482 and the power assisted steering components differ from one another. For this reason, the two adapters illustrated should be used when carrying out the pressure test.

→ Adapter for test appliance V.A.G 1402/2

• ‒ Disconnect the pressure line at the pump.

• ‒ → Install adapter and test appliance. Open gauge cut-off valve.
• ‒ Start engine and if necessary top up fluid in reservoir.
• ‒ With engine idling, close cut-off valve (not longer than 5 seconds) and read off pressure.

Specification:
70 - 80 bar

If the reading is less, or more than the specified figure, renew pump => page 48-45.

Checking system pressure

• ‒ → With engine idling and cut-off valve on gauge open, rotate steering wheel to left hand lock and then to right hand lock and read off pressure indicated on gauge at each end position.

Specification:
70 - 80 bar

If the specified figure is not attained at either the left or right hand lock, renew steering gear complete => page 48-41.

If leaks are present on steering pinion or on steering rack seals in the housing, the steering gear is to be renewed. To check the steering rack seals, slacken off bellows hose clips and push bellows to one side.
