The airbag control unit -J234- is located behind the console on the tunnel. It is equipped with a fault memory. The self-diagnosis connection point is located behind the cover under the heating and ventilation controls. |
The control unit detects faults in the airbag system and stores them in a permanent memory. |
Faults which can be attributed to a temporary open circuit in the wiring or a loose contact, will also be stored. These faults will be displayed as sporadic faults “SP”. |
When the ignition is switched on, the airbag warning lamp -K75- lights up for about 4 seconds and then goes out again. If the lamp then flashes for a further 15 seconds, this indicates that the front passenger airbag has been deactivated. |
t
| If the airbag warning lamp -K75- does not go out after about 4 seconds, the supply voltage for the airbag control unit -J234- is not OK. Read fault memory → Chapter. |
t
| A fault is present if the airbag warning lamp -K75- lights up again. Read fault memory → Chapter. |
t
| If the airbag warning lamp -K75- flashes continuously, then the airbag control unit -J234- must be renewed. |
To commence fault finding, initiate self-diagnosis. |
Retrieve the stored information with the fault reader -V.A.G 1551- and check which components are defective using the auxiliary airbag tester -VAS 5056-. |
The fault information displayed is used to refer to a fault table with notes on the possible causes for directed repair measures. |
WARNING Only visual check of wiring! |
Do not carry out electrical continuity tests or measurements to ignition circuits! |
Only check wiring with ignition switched off! |
