Deactivating front passenger's airbag

If a customer wishes to transport a child in a rearward facing child seat on the front passenger seat, then the connection in the wiring harness to the front passenger airbag modulemust be disconnected and a vehicle specific resistance installed in addition to the deactivation of the software.

The repair kit 1H0 998 521 B is required for the conversion.

Note:

• ◆ Obtain radio unit code before disconnecting battery.

The front passenger's airbag must be removed for this.

=> General body repairs; Repair group 69; Airbag; Removing and installing front passenger's airbag unit

• ‒ → Connect earth cable -2- which is part of repair kit 1H0 998 521 B to front passenger's airbag module.

Note:

First screw eyelet -3- onto front passenger's airbag module housing.

• ‒ Slide foam tube over earth cable and connect connector -1- to front passenger's airbag unit, then secure the cable with cable tie and commercial type fabric adhesive tape. (Use foam tube and cable tie from repair kit 1H0 998 521 B ).

• ‒ → Insert connector housing -1- which is part of repair kit 1H0 998 521 B in connector -2- to airbag control unit.
• ‒ Secure connector housing -1- and connector -2- rattle-free to airbag wiring harness (Use foam tube and cable tie from repair kit 3B0 998 521 B).
• ‒ Install front passenger's airbag unit.
• ‒ Reconnect battery earth strap.

Note:

• ◆ After connecting battery, check vehicle equipment (radio, clock, electric windows) as per Workshop manual and/or Owner's manual.

• ‒ Connect fault reader .
• ‒ Switch on ignition.
• ‒ Press key -1- for "Rapid data transfer" mode.

• ‒ Press keys -1- and -5- (the address word of the vehicle system to be tested "Airbag" is entered with 15).

• ‒ Confirm entry with the Q key.

• ‒ Press ⇒key.

• ‒ Press keys -1- and -0-.

• ‒ Confirm entry with the Q key.

• ‒ Enter the appropriate channel number (for example 01 = Deactivating passenger airbag 00001 or activating passenger airbag 00000).

• ‒ Press keys -0- and -1- and confirm with Q key.

• ‒ Press ⇒key.

• ‒ Enter 00001 and confirm with Q key.

• ‒ Press ⇒key.

• ‒ Confirm entry with the Q key.

• ‒ If the value is to be stored confirm entry with Q key.
• ‒ If the value is not to be stored then erase entry with C key. On the display appears the previous value.

• ‒ Press ⇒key.

• ‒ Press keys -0- and -6- to end output.

• ‒ Confirm entry with the Q key.

The airbag (K75) warning lamp goes out.

• ‒ Switch off ignition.
• ‒ Separate connection to fault reader V.A.G 1551.

• ‒ → Insert notice plate -1- into diagnostic connector (notice plate remains in vehicle until front passenger airbag is reactivated).
• ‒ Switch on ignition.

The warning lamp (K75) lights up at first for approx. 4 seconds and then flashes for a further approx. 15 seconds. This signalizes that the front passenger's airbag is switched off.

• ‒ → Stick label (Passenger airbag disabled) to mirror cover and passenger door.

After deactivating or activating the passenger side airbag the registration card (see illustrations catalogue in Handbook Service Technic) must be completed and sent to the relevant distribution centre or importer for registration. Confirmation of the conversion must be entered into service documents.

In Germany, the blocking (deactivating) or reactivation of the system must be checked by an authorised test centre, for example the TÜV and confirmed with an entry in the vehicle documents.

Activating front passenger's airbag

Note:

Before activating the front passenger's airbag with the fault reader, the resistor connector and earth cable must be removed from the front passenger's airbag wiring harness.

The front passenger's airbag must be removed for this.

Note:

• ◆ Obtain radio unit code before disconnecting battery.

• ‒ → Remove earth cable -2- from front passenger's airbag module.

Note:

First separate connector -1-, then unscrew eyelet -3-.

• ‒ Separate cable tie and free airbag wiring harness.
• ‒ → Separate connector housing -1- from connector -2-.

• ‒ Install front passenger's airbag unit.

• ‒ → Pull notice plate -1- out from diagnosis connector (notice plate is no longer required).
• ‒ Reconnect battery earth strap.

Note:

• ◆ After connecting battery, check vehicle equipment (radio, clock, electric windows) as per Workshop manual and/or Owner's manual.

• ‒ Connect fault reader => Page 01-17.
• ‒ Switch on ignition.
• ‒ Press key -1- for "Rapid data transfer" mode.

• ‒ Press keys -1- and -5- (the address word of the vehicle system to be tested "Airbag" is entered with 15).

• ‒ Confirm entry with the Q key.

• ‒ Press ⇒key.

• ‒ Press keys -1- and -0-.

• ‒ Confirm entry with the Q key.

• ‒ Press keys -0- and -1- and confirm with Q key.

• ‒ Press ⇒key.

• ‒ Enter 00000 and confirm with Q key.

• ‒ Confirm entry with the Q key.

• ‒ If the value is to be stored confirm entry with Q key.

• ‒ Press ⇒key.

• ‒ Press keys -0- and -6- to end the output.

• ‒ Confirm entry with the Q key.

The airbag warning lamp (K75) goes out.

• ‒ Switch off ignition.
• ‒ Separate connection to fault reader V.A.G 1551.
• ‒ Switch on ignition.

The airbag warning lamp (K75) lights up and must go out after approx. 4 seconds.

• ‒ → Remove label (Passenger airbag disabled) from passenger door.
