Reading fault memory > < Function
Connecting fault readerV.A.G 1551 and selecting function (reading out control unit version)
Connecting fault reader -V.A.G 1551- and selecting function (reading out control unit version)
l  All fuses according to current flow diagram OK.
l  Battery voltage OK (at least 9 V).
  Note
t  The airbag system is switched off during self-diagnosis.
t  The fault memory can be erased only after a repair has been made and the memory has been read.
With ignition switched off, connect fault reader -V.A.G 1551- to the diagnostic connector using the diagnostic cable -V.A.G 1551/1- as follows:
–  Unclip diagnostics connection cover under heating and ventilation controls.
   
–  First connect black plug on diagnostic cable -V.A.G 1551/1- to black agnostic connector in vehicle (voltage supply).

  Note
If the display remains blank, do not connect the white plug! If this is the case, check the voltage supply for the fault reader -V.A.G 1551- according to current flow diagram.

–  Connect white plug of fault reader -V.A.G 1551- to white diagnostic connector in vehicle. The blue plug is not required.
  Note
t  Additional operating information depending on the programme can be printed out by pressing the HELP key on the fault reader -V.A.G 1551-.
t  The key is used for advancing the programme sequence.
t  The PRINT key is used for switching on the printer (warning lamp in key lights up).
–  Switch on ignition.
–  Press key -1- for “rapid data transfer” mode.

–  Press keys -1- and -5- (the address word of the vehicle system to be tested “Airbag” is entered with 15).

–  Confirm entry with the Q key.

The control unit identification number is displayed:

t  If one of the adjacent fault messages appears in the display, the possible causes of the fault can be printed out with the HELP key.

Control unit not answering!            
t  Ignition must be switched on.

K wire does not switch to positive!     
t  Faults have occurred at the start of or during the programme (external sources of faults?).

No signal from control unit!            
t  Check diagnostic cables and also voltage supply and earth connection.
–  After rectifying the possible causes of the fault, once again enter the address word 15 for “Airbag” and confirm with the Q key.

Indicated in display after entering the address word 15:
and then the following appears in the display:

Tester sends the address word 15         
Control unit identification number is displayed.
–  Press key.

Only the functions listed can at present be used for self-diagnosis.
When the key is pressed, the fault reader -V.A.G 1551- program will return to its initial position.
